Tip Start: A feature that allows the driver to crank and start the engine by turning the key to the start position and then releasing it. The vehicle electronics will then take over the cranking and starting process to ensure that proper engine speed is attained, to release the starter motor at the appropriate time, and to prevent double starts.

Ohhhhh. That makes sense. What I usually end up doing is putting in the key and keeping it turned until the engine fires up. Based on this it sounds like I can just turn the key to start and then back again and let the electronics take over. Am I reading that right?

That's right, give it a quick turn, let go and it will start.

There was an issue posted on here a while back where someone reported starting their Nitro & releasing the key, only to have the starter continue to spin even after the engine was running. A small number of readers replied that they too had experienced the problem, including myself....... once. At the time I thought it was because I had "flicked" the key quickly to start the truck.

Any chance the problem is related to this feature? Has any TSB mentioned an issue like this? It happened to me months ago & hasn't happened again...... but my dealer has applied the patches to several TSBs twice already.

It could very well be related. I'm sure not many are aware of the TIP Start feature and when the start runs on and the vehicle starts it may be viewed to them as a problem. However, if the starter remains engaged after the vehicle has started then there obviously are other issues that may be in fact be related to this feature.

Starting fuctions are controlled by the PCM and TIPM.

    Comparison??? Nitro vs Toyota FJ

I looked at, but didn't test drive the FJ before buying the Nitro and it is probably considered by many potential Nitro buyers.

Since you drive both, how about a short comparison of the two? (in another thread)

The inside of the FJ looks very........utility vehicle and not comfortable or full featured, like my Nitro R/T. I like the quality of Toyota's, but the brand name is starting to cost a lot more too lately.

Same deal with the X-Terra. Ignoring reliability reports, on paper the Nitro and the X-Terra are virtually identical. But inside the X-Terra looks cheap and isn't nearly as comfortable. I thought the Nitro was pretty far down the food chain, but apparently the X-Terra is considered one notch down from that. I don't know where the FJ is supposed to be in the pecking order.

    Owners Manual Page 236

Page 236 in the owners manual describes this feature. The manual also describes resetting key to off position to reset the transmission limp home mode. There is neat stuff in the book that came with the truck.

So is there any way to start one of these animals when this thing is acting up? How do you tell if it's the TIP or the starter itself?

I got a 2007 Nitro R/T and I just went to go home from work. Hit the key. It sounded like a camera taking a picture. Then a whirring sound. Starter or TIP?

Sounds more like a dead battery.
If it was the TIPM you would get nothing at all.

Thought it was the starter at first. The battery was fine in the am when I went to work. Radio and all works fine. I guess I'll try jumping it. So if the TIP would do nothing, and the jump doesn't work I guess it'll be the starter!

At least it was an easy fix.
But the question remains, What caused the battery to go dead?

I still don't get this start feature? When I was at the dealership test driving the Nitro, I saw the dealer rep put the key in and press the unlock/lock button and the Nitro started? Is this the feature??? And this was with a factory key fob.
