unfortunately it could be anything, just keep trying things to narrow down the possibilities,
if you continue with the same method as above or try to start in "N" and the engine starts, then maybe its the gear position sensor which is faulty,
if your nitro is an auto transmission, turn key to crank engine then straight away let go of the key, the engine should continue cranking untill the engine starts (tip start feature), if this improves the starting then could be ignition switch related,
