New here and did some searches through past threads about this issue and did not find anything. Hope I am not being redundant. A few weeks ago when turning on the a/c a smell like burning rubber, or my daughter says smells like new tennis shoes still in the box, blows into the car. Even with the heater. It stays strong and does not diminish after a few minutes. I live in Houston where the weather is hot/cold anything goes. I commute about 1 1/2 hours to work each way and the smell doesn't let up. No warning lights on the dash, no smoke. I have to turn it off after 10 minutes, cant take the odor plus I;m scared something under the hood is going to start on fire. I know a little about cars but not THAT much. Anyone care to trouble shoot this for me? Thanks so much!!!

I have a couple questions.
Does your fan work on all speeds?
Does the smell start from the second you turn on the heater?
Does the smell start from the second you turn on the A/C?
Is the smell stronger with the A/C on or heater on?
Do you still smell it even when the fan selector is set to 0 (off) from a cold start? In other words, if you get in the rig after letting it sit over night, set the fan to 0, start the rig and drive it, do you still smell it?
Is the oder sweet smelling?
Is it more of a taste in your mouth or a true odor?
Do you see any kind of residue on the passenger side floor or firewall?
Have you tried to feel the blower motor to see if it is hot? You can open the glove box and press the back top sides inward to get it to open way up.

Sorry to hear that you have a problem. This probably is not making for a nice driving experience. I have heard about a growth of vegetation in the evaporator. To get rid of it spray a weed killer into the air intake for the system and run the fan on high speed for a while. Do not drive until the weed killer odor is gone as this can have bad results as well. If you do not feel comfortable doing this take it to your dealer for repair. Hope this helps.

Hey- I did some research regarding the same thing that Chevygirl59 did with regards to a smell of something burning. There is a strange sound as well- like a coughing sound as I shut the fan off to reduce the smell of burnt wiring. The wiring smell was so strong, I needed to shut it off. I was wondering if parts, if it were the core, are readily available. appreciate any help. JoeyD
