I am at the point where I need to decide if I am going to purchase Chrysler's extended warranty. I have about 28,000 miles and drive about 20,000 miles a year. I usually keep my vehicles about four years or about 80,000 miles. So far I have not experienced any breakdowns or needed any warranty coverage yet. The only problem was the two recalls. This has been one of the most trouble free vehicles I have ever owned. My fear is after the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty expires (should be before the end of this year) I will have some trouble. It is more a feeling than fact and just the way my luck seems to go.

My question is what would you do in this situation? Would you spend the money on the extended warranty or chance it?

Thanx!

If I still have my Nitro near 36000 I will certainly spend the money. There have been a few issues already (7000 miles) and I'm sure it will not lessen with time.

I would think that the extra 50000 miles that you will put on it will be easier knowing that you are covered.

If it helps you any, when I purchased my Nitro new, I had them throw on the 5 year/160000km bumper to bumper warranty. For the extra money, I'm already thinking it's worth it. I don't think the 4 speed tranny is a good solid one, and I think it will eventually go on me. Also, who knows whether my replacement roof rails won't need replacing again.

Anyway, I'm glad I purchased the extended warranty...for no other reason than when I go into the dealer for service and they look up my warranty, they practically fall all over themselves trying to make sure I'm happy. :chuckle:

My, from your post it sounds like you're a bit risk averse. Nothing wrong with that, you need to sleep at night. If you are already getting "feelings", it's probably best you pay for the peace of mind.

When I bought mine, the Dealer wanted $2500 for the extended warranty. I reasoned it like this. I drive about the same amount as you do, the extended warranty would probably be extra coverage for an additional window of less than two years, maybe a bit longer. At a mere 5% return on this money if invested, the additional two years would cost me $3000. I figured I could fix a lot of problems with that money.

You can call that cheap, i won't be offended and you wouldn't be far off anyway. I'm a bit of a gambler though and the risk doesn't bother me. Could it backfire?...of course, but if I'm out of warranty, I figure I'm also free to find a cheaper garage to help me out if I run into expensive trouble.

In the end it's up to each of our own comfort level.

Same here.

I'm planning on keeping my rig for a while (well beyond 5 years), and I thought the full warranty to match the lifetime powertrain warranty was a good idea. And this was before I saw the potential "issues" with the Nitro. For my situation, it's a good buy.

I probably wouldn't put out the money if I wasn't planning on keeping this rig for a while.

I have gotten the 7 yr 100,000 bumper to bumper on my last 7 new chrysler cars , all Grand Caravans . I lease them for 2 or 2 1/2 years and put on 30,000 a year . I then give it to my wife when I get a new one . At the end of 5 years it would have about 85 to 90 thousand miles on it so I could sell it private and still have 2 yrs and 15,000 miles left on warranty . In all cases it has been worthwhile . Dealers around my home town get $ 85.00 a hour which can add up real fast with a trans or electrical problem . The new 5 spd trans and 4 wheel drive on my R/T could also cost a bunch of money to repair . The best part is my business pays for the lease and the warranty which makes it a 100% tax write off .

You need to run the numbers, and read and reread any fine print to see if it's right for you. If you keep vehicles until they die, it may be OK. My own opinion is that extended warranties are offered to make money for them, not because they are nice guys and want to loose money on you. I guess I've been lucky so far with my vehicles.

I am just going to use their lifetime warranty. Didn't any of you get that program. The first 36,000 they cover everything and after that it covers the whole powertrain - engine, trans, drivetrain, etc. All the big stuff that would cost a h e double hockey sticks of a lot to replace.

I'm with you Cowboy. The dealer offered to make the lifetime warranty a full bumper-to-bumper for around $3,000. I have purchased the extended warranties on previous cars just to cover major stuff such as the tranny or engine.

I figured that since they were already covered under the lifetime warranty, I could save the $3,000 and use if for those smaller things that might come up.

I have also found that the extended warranties tend to have more things they don't cover and what they actually do cover. :D

My thinking is that with all of the electronics, computers, and other issues I have read about on this forum, the Maximum Care warranty that covers 5007 + components for eight years from date of first in service and 100K miles is good piece of mind insurance. I hope I never have to use it!
