Has anyone heard of a TSB for the 6 speed? I've looked, and couldn't find one.
When the temperature is anything below freezing, I have an awful time shifting into second gear. Sometimes it will grind slightly, then go in. Other times it just refuses. Double clutching helps a little, but at -20c, that doesn't help either. I'm stuck having to rev the $#&% out of first, then go straight to third.
Once the tranny is warmed up, it will shift fine.

Anyone else have this problem?

I've had My Nitro at 8 deg F and it did not shift any differently than it did when warm.

I would take this to your dealer. It sounds like something is not right, maybe not enough or too much grease.

Mabybe something is wrong with the Synchros.

The 6 speed has been around for a while and is a pretty good German unit.

Mine does that in 4th gear when it is cold. or sometimes it will go in and then just jump out when I accelerate. I can never get it to duplicate with the dealer cuz by the time I drive it 1hr 40min to the dealer she is all warmed up so they won't fix it. Let me know what ur dealer says. Thanks and good luck.

Jumping out of gear is usually a linkage or synchro issue-- I am not sure why this is temp related.

Maybe you need to leave it overnight at the dealer, outside on a cold night?

Inconvenient, but maybe the best way to find out what is wrong.

You know, if the dealer really wanted to diagnose this, all he would have to do is to pack some dry ice around the tranny along with an insulation blanket and a temperature probe.

This will bring the tranny down below freezing in less than an hour.

You can even bring him the dry ice which is easily availble in stores or fish markets.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having issues....:i_rolleyes:
Mine goes to the dealer next week, it's got a recall and TSB's to be taken care of along with the hard shifting! I'm hoping it doesn't take more than a day, that's all I could borrow a car for.

Well another Nitro hard to shift into second gear. It is parked at the dealer for the night. They will drive it in the AM. Were the other folks with this issue resolved? If so how?
I will keep you posted with my results.

Mine is still doing it with Fourth gear and almost all the time with 2nd when it is cold. I have started arbitration with CAMVAP and have a hearing on the 30th cuz my dealership has washed its hands of my Nitro. They can never get it to duplicate for them but are also not willing to keep it overnight on a cold nite so of course it is not going to do it for them. Good luck to everyone else.

Got the Nitro back today. Here is what the dealer put into the computer. Could not duplicate at this time. A little harsh when cold normal---- Added 1/2 quart oil.
On the hand written notes it said "Hard to shift when cold, shifts OK when warm, Car is not designed to "speed shift".
When my dad used to drag race, speed shifting was, No clutch, slam into next gear.
When I asked what "speed shift" means they called the tech., that test drove it, to explain. He said that you can not shift fast. I asked what should I do, let the Idol come down so it will sync into gear? He said that I should not have to do that. If I have to do that, then the syncro gear is bad. DUH:i_rolleyes: They then said if the issue continues to get worse bring it back, and they will revisit it at that time. And effectively ended the conversation by walking away, using Lunch as an excuse.
I have had 8+ cars in the past 20 years that had manual transmissions. So I know how to shift. The only other rig that I have second gear issues with, is in my 88 Cherokee. Bad syncros. I will let you know how the Nitro progresses. Adding the oil did make a little difference, but not much.

This sounds like BS to me.

My Nitro shifts into 2nd easily even when at 8 de F all night long.

This same Tranny is used in other Mecedes vehicles as well as the Jeep Liberty.

Time to try a new dealer.

I looked for you on this issue. All that can say is to see if they can drain and fill your trans. and to see if that might work. If and this is a big IF that does not fix your prob, then they should replace the trans. And you said that they would not keep the car over night to verify the concern? That dose not sound right to me. Let me know what hapends.

Sorry I didn't get back to you guys. I was given the generic "It drove fine for us" That was left at the dealer over night, in the beginning of March, so around freezing or lower.
Even to this day, it shifts hard in to 2nd. It goes in for 50K service in another 2 weeks. Hopfully they can drain the fluid and see how much metal I've taken off the 2nd gear! If it doesn't get better, then I've got 10K (before the warranty runs out) to drive the $*&^#$ out of it and try to drop the tanny! My only worry is then they will tell me I've abused it.:i_rolleyes:
