Hi all, I have 1,100 miles on my nitro, it has the 3.7 engine in it, I am only getting 17.4 miles a gallon staight highway driving. I am going by filling up the gas tank going on a road trip doing 72 miles per hour with cruise set, comeing back home and filling up gas tank again. Window sticker says 23 highway 17 city, this is way off I figured I would at least get 20 mpg highway. Will my gas milage increase as the engine gets more mileage on it or did I buy a gas hog?

Hi arfz28, welcome to the forum!

I have 3300 miles on mine and mine is between 17 and 19.6mpg so far, hoping it'll get better. This is just a bit less than I expected from the Nitro, I'm not willing to call it a 'gas hog'. Also keep in mind that the Nitro is a heavy vehicle with a curb weight of 4,000-4,200lbs. I've been on a long highway trip 400 miles total at 75mph with cruise control and air on (air always on since I got it in May), and the mpg didn't get up there either.

My attitude is that I love my Nitro, I hope the gas mileage gets better over time and it probably will, and...if I have to put a few more gallons in the tank to drive something that nice, then it's worth it to me.

I have a little over 7,000 miles on my Nitro and I got this week highway and city 18.5 miles to the gallon. I think that is great considering the weight of the truck. I love my Nitro
Is yours a 6-speed or an Auto?

It would be interseting to see the MPG of formum members with sticks vs auto.

I don't bother to check my MPG very often but when I did, I was satisfied with the results.

R/T 4.0 Gas Mileage

I've been testing my gas mileage at different speeds, both with cruise and without. My best so far is 21.8 highway without cruise and at 65. It actually measure worse below 60 and above 70. Like all vehicles aerodynamics play a big part and each brand is going to have it's optimum range. I found that the cruise is harder on gas than I am, particularly on hills. I haven't averaged less than 19.2, so it's within the range on the sticker. You gotta remember this is a pretty heavy vehicle for it's size.

Those sound like good numbers to me.

I haven't checked my MPG lately, but I am going noticeably further on a tank around town since I put in the Jet stage 2 chip and the K&N CAI. Of course I am doing that on premium (I think I can drop to Midgrade, but for only a $ 0.20 difference, I'll pay for the premium)

For one thing, I can shift to 6th gear earlier as the engine now pulls better at low RPM.

I did just over 210mi on the interstate today and averaged 23mpg at 70mph

Wow that is great gas milage. How many miles do you have on your nitro and what motor do you have in it and is it an automatic?

I only rarely check my mileage, but I did the other day coming back from Boone NC.

I averaged about 21 MPG at 75-80 MPH including some dead stops for wrecks and traffic lights as well as a bit of city driving.

This was with 5 full sized people, luggage, 3 dogs(albeit small ones) and the air on. This was of course on Premium with a Jet stage 2 chip and the K&N CAI.

I expect I will get a bit better mileage now that I have a the new exhaust and headers. I need to run Midgrade or better with the jet 2 chip.

I am not claiming that that my mods are a good economic investment. I did them for the power not the MPG. It is a nice side benefit to get better mileage.

I would never call the Nitro a gas hog.

I have no idea how much better the 6-speed is in real life, but it seems that my 6-speed gets better MPG, at least in town than your 4 speed automatics.

See my notes in this thead, I have a similar setup as you describe and I get in the 20's hwy. Keep in mind that I must run mid-grade or better. If you are on a thight budget stay with the Jet 1 chip as it can run on regular.

Gas Mileage

This week I put in 89 octane. I want to see if I will get better gas mileage. Not that I am getting poor mileage. I just want to see if there is a change. I paid $3.07 a gallon that is quite high here in New York. The Nitro feels more respnsive and I noticed that the engine seems quiter just a bit and notice the acceleration seems a little better. Once I get gas again I will post my mpg's.

We shall see but at 3.07 a gallon I wont be doing this too often only if there is a significant change in my mileage.

Happy motoring to all and be safe

If you drive 10,000 miles year and average 16MPG (I think you do better),and Midgrade is $ 0.30 more per Gal (I think less) than you are only talking about
$ 187.00 more per year.

What is all this fuss about the price of Mid grade or even premium for that matter? Back when gas was under $ 1.00/gal, the % difference was much greater today.

If you believe your Nitro runs better on midgrade---- enjoy!! After all do you buy the cheapest beer or do you buy the beer that tastes good?
