I am upgrading the factory stereo and speakers. I have the 6 speaker stereo, not the Infinity version. I'm going to try to make a factory looking sub enclosure out of a busted one and a non-sub right rear trim panel. I'll post some of those pictures in here once I get that going. I'll try to post all my progress pictures in here. This may take me a month or two to complete. My wife thinks I'm wasting money on upgrading, but at least two of the speakers are blown, and I can't have streaming audio without some sort of phone interface.

First step (for me) is replacing the tweeters. Since I have to run all new wires, I figure I can live without highs for a few weeks, and the tweeters (I thought) were going to be the biggest pain due to what I thought was going to be a metal fabrication step. When I went junkyarding today, I discovered that the Nitros without tweeters came with these plastic plates that seemed to be designed to put an aftermarket tweeter in.

So I used a handy-dandy hole saw and put in the new tweeters

Well, that's a handy tip! Are you going to amplify the dash and/or door speakers?

I'm thinking about just getting the 10" Skar Audio sub, enclosure, amp, and wiring kit, from Amazon, for around $300. I've never heard of Skar, outside of Amazon, but it got pretty good reviews..... If they're real. It'll take up a bit of room in the back, but I think I can live with it.

Yes, all the dash and door speakers will be amplified. Still considering trying to find some rear door cards that have the factory Infinity setup (tweeter molds), but until I find them, I'll just install some 6.5" I have from a previous install. I'll leave all the factory wiring in place (just in case I want to revert back for some crazy reason), but will be running all new wiring front to back.

I was looking at those really thin kicker subs and wondering if they might fit under the cargo tray.
I have one, but I'm putting it in the Infinity sub location. I can check out the clearance, but it seems like that might be a tight fit. It definitely doesn't have the volume unless you build some sort of form-fitting enclosure.

Hey, did you happen to notice, on the Nitros from the junkyard that didn't have dash tweeters installed, if the wiring for them was there anyway? I don't even know what setup I have. I might not even have the dash tweeters in mine.

Yep. Not only was the wiring there, the little plastic plate things had the wiring plugged into it. It was like that for the two I found with the little plastic things. If you look at the picture I posted, it has a place where the factory wiring can plug into it. I figured everything was wired so it would be a piece of cake to add tweeters when the customer wanted them.

Yeah, I thought it looked like that, but wasn't sure...... because it didn't really make sense to me that that would be there.😄

Right. I thought the same thing. I figure they did it like that to prevent the tweeter wire from falling back into the depths of the dashboard.

Unless each speaker has its own amp attached to it, they will put the factory amp in the right rear panel even if it doesn't have the infinity system with the subwoofer.

Wait, are you saying that all Nitros have a factory amp?? Even if you don't have the factory subwoofer and/or Infinity system?? I've never heard that before.

No, they do not all have an amp from the factory. Only certain radio options did.
The base 4 speaker did not.
The base 6 speaker did not.
I think the kicker added an amp, but not sure if it was the Infinity amp--if so it would have to mean that the infinity amp would fit under both styles of right rear quarter panel.
The Premium Infinity upgrade with 9 speakers definitely did.

Base 4 speaker system: (4 ohm)
2x dash speakers wired but not populated
2x 6.5" 1-way mid bass speakers in front doors
2x 6.5" 1-way mid bass speakers in rear doors

6-speaker system: (4 ohm)
2x 2.5" 1-way dash speakers
2x 6.5" 1-way mid bass speakers in front doors
2x 6.5" 1-way mid bass speakers in rear doors

Kicker mopar upgrade: (4 ohm)
2x 2.5" 1-way mids,highs dash speakers
2x 6.5x9" 1-way bass speakers in front doors
2x 6.5x9" 2-way full-range speakers in rear doors
2x 10" 400W dual-square box sub to place behind rear seats
amp - not sure which or where it mounted

Premium Infinity Sound System:
9 speakers:
  • upgraded 6-speakers in previous locations
  • 2x 0.75" tweeters in rear doors, mounted above the 6.5"s, maybe different door panel?
  • 8" sub in factory enclosure inside larger right rear quarter panel
  • 365W Infinity mono amp inside larger right rear quarter panel

Ok, I wasn't really aware of that Kicker upgrade setup. I thought the "Kicker upgrade" was just the consumer buying the 4, or 6 Kicker door/dash speakers, and swapping them out. I didn't know about the Kicker sub box. Anyway, doing some searching, which brought me back to this site, shows that the amp for the Kicker sub box is located....... inside the box!!

I know on old Chrysler Infinity systems, the speakers themselves had amplifiers attached to them. So I was wondering if the amp in the Infinity system controlls the whole system, or just the added subwoofer? Either way, I don't think an amp will fit under the non-subwoofer rear panel.

I did some more searching and there were two kicker amps actually:
  • pn 77KICK36 - 4 channel 184W
  • pn 77KICK46 - 8 channel 364W 46W/channel

the kicker sub is:
- pn 77KICK19AB, came with a 200W amp

the front door and dash speakers are:
- pn 77KICK15

the rear door speakers are:
- pn 77KICK10

The kicker upgrade was available as an option for any factory radio, and also for models with the Infinity system. I'm not sure how it worked with the Infinity system.

Oh, so there was an amp(s) that you could get with the door/dash speaker upgrades? I thought the Kicker door/dash speaker upgrade was just powered by the factory head unit. So, I wonder where they put that amp then?

No. The base modle is not likely to be amplified, although I have seen Chrysler do it on the lowend radios before. Those older models had the amplifiers attached to the actual speakers. The premium and infinity modles are amplified and will have the amp mounted above the subwoofer in the right rear panel
