Do they have traffic jams in Colorado? :Na_Na_Na_Na::D
Not sure...never seen one here...probably why I live here...but if the jam is so bad you have time to watch a movie..throw it in park and watch. Maybe not the most convenient, but certainly safer than concentrating on movie, brake, car in front, car behind, cars to both sides, cell phone, shaving, eating, and whatever else you big city folk do while driving...LOL. :Racing: :shakehead:

The procedure will enable DVD viewing while parked, but not while driving. You need an interface to do that. I wrote about finding one on another thread....but *poof* it's gone! Look for a FreeGig1 by NAV-TV.

here are the install instructions i found for the freegig that will allow dvd playback while driving:

http://www.nav-tv.com/download/chrysler/FreeGIG.pdf

also there is no need for the starscan tool as far as i can tell if you go the freegig route.

I believe the StarScan is only required to enable DVD playback if it was disabled from the factory.
That module they're selling doesn't look too plugNplay.
It looks like something you'd have to buy AND snip your wiring harness and do some soldering.
Maybe I've missed something?

Not plug and play

niftie, from what I see, you are correct. You are definitely correct about the StarScan only being required if the DVD was disabled from the factory. Of course, if that were the case, MyGIG would be rendered useless and the navigational programming wouldn't work either since all of this is tied together. I can't imagine anyone getting it in that condition and have to use the StarScan to enable it. Here in Texas, my video works fine right up to the point where you shift out of park, then you can still hear the soundtrack. You never have to have the park brake set.

About FreeGig1 by NAV-TV, looks as if you have to rip your dash apart and cut the signal device into the CAN bus wires. Evidently all it does is keep telling MyGIG that the transmission is in park. That would be why you have to turn it off before the navigational system would function correctly again when the vehicle is in motion.

starscan has only 2 functions. it either allows dvds to be played only when the vehicle is in park or not at all. the freegig may not be plug and play but it allows dvds to be played while the vehicle is in drive. i'm also not too keen on cutting wires and soldering to enable playback of dvd's while driving. it seems that right now thats the only way to do it if you have mygig. i would hate to see someone go out and spend money on a starscan tool only to find out that it wont allow dvd playback while driving.

Let me chime in a little bit about the Star Scan tool. It's an OBDII diagnostic tool used with Chrysler products. I use it on a frequent basis when diagnosing PreOwned Vehicles at the Dodge dealer I work for.

It's typically leased or purchased by dealers. I don't believe it's up for individual sale, but with a price tag rumored to be a few thousand dollars, is not ideal for 1 vehicle.

After purchasing my Nitro, I was able to use the StarScanTool to enable DVD playback while out of Park. You can use the Navigation as long as the DVD is not in Playback mode. Other things offered with the Star Scan (Almost every Dodge/Chrysler dealer should have at least 1) is the ability to set vehicle/customer preferences. From setting the headlight delay, to perimeter lighting, to programming the horn to chirp or not when using your keyless entry.

Are you sure about that?
I'm 99% sure you cannot program the DVD to play back video while out of park with the StarScan tool.

100% positive the StarSCAN does not allow you to enable DVD or NAV operation while in motion.

I just tried what I thought was enabling playback while in motion, and you're right. I plugged in the StarScan again while at work, and the only option is to enable playback on the front monitor. The disclaimer that I didn't read the first time, reads the same as the owners manual.

It will only play in Park with Automatic transmissions and in Neutral with the parking brake on with Manual transmissions. What happened with shifting out of park with the DVD player in playback mode for what could have been a few seconds, may have been a fluke.
