Soooo...

I gave myself a time limit of 2 hours (I have a 1 year old) My evaporator needs replaced and I was trying to save myself $1200. Is it just me or is the dash removal a PITA? I felt I had another 2 hours in removal of things when I decided to just put it all back together... Am I wasting my time or should I just do it myself...?

No, you are correct... it is a real PIA!! I attempted to go this route with mine, and ended up giving up in disgust. I had everything disconnected and the dash was actually loose in the Nitro, but I could not get it to come out past the steering column support on the drivers side. I had plans on revisiting it but I don't think that's going to happen now.

Is anyone aware of a "step-by-step" removal that I'm able to check out online? I'd like to look at the steps whole process before I head to the shop with it.i have searched this forum, and the Internet, and all I can seem to find is...

It's not as big a job as I thought it would be, with the exception of the aforementioned problem with final dash removal. I'm pretty sure I could get to the point I was at in about 2 hrs or so... now that I'm not guessing... "Do I need to remove this one, and what about that one?" As Scar0 said, that is probably the best "how-to" you will find on the 'net for this. I have access to Mitchel on Demand, and it pretty much says the same thing word for word.

I even searched thru a lot of the posts on the Liberty forum, since the Nitro is based on the Liberty, to see if anyone had a detailed write up on it, but nothing I could find.

My mechanic says that this needs to be replaced also, because I have an AC leak. He said its a 6 to 7 hour job and a $70 dollar part. $1200 seems a bit steep.

Just a suggestion to anyone that is replacing this themselves or paying a mechanic to do it: have the heater core replaced at the same time. They are right next to each other, and it just doesn't make sense to not spend the extra cost for the heater core when it's already out of the vehicle. I have been told 8-9 yrs old is just about the life expectancy of these.

Well since I was going to attempt it myself, I had already tracked down a new evaporator. After talking to a service advisor, I was informed that they give the techs eight hours to complete this job.... YIKES! If I had a garage, it would be a different story. Dealer said it will be done Tuesday $1100 for the install and service. The part ran me $380...Not worth a headache

Well i doing the evap challenge tomorrow. I got a new evap and heater core to replace. Smelled freon in my truck 2 weeks ago. Plus while sitting i the garage this week the damn water pump started leaking. Not to mention i found both valve cover gaskets leaking as well. So i got a busy weekend. The major plus is i can vaccum down my a/c an recharge at work.
I lucky to have all the tools and info I need to do the repairs myself. Will let everyone know once it is completed.

well all the repairs are complete. Was not really that bad. Just a little time consuming. Just follow the steps I found online for the dash removal

Does anyone know what the best AC Evap and Heater Core are? I'm looking at rockauto.com , will be getting this replaced in the spring?

Since I have a manual 4x4 does that mean I need a certain kind?

Is the A/C condenser located in the same area?

Not sure on #1
#2 same on all Nitro.
#3 in front of radiator.
You can see mine here. Lower darker part in front.

If I had an automatic, the Trany cooler would sit on top of the condenser.
