I just got a postcard in the mail that was very suspcious that asked me to call a toll free number with my odometer reading.

The card came from "Motor Vehicle Protection Corp, Agent for Vemco"

I googled the company and found that at one time a NC Fox news affiliate ran a story on these guys as scam artists.

Other people claim the outfit is legit-- despite their deceptive marketing tactics.

Anyone else out there know about this?

I don't know anything about Vemco but I've had difficulties in the past with aftermarket warranties. I bought a Dakota in '88 and purchased an extended warranty at the same time. A couple of years later I moved to Seattle.
While away for work one day my starter failed. This occurred on Anacortes Island (not a whole lot of Dodge dealers there). I called the dealer in San Diego where I'd purchased the vehicle. They stated that they'd look up the info and get right back to me. Two hours later I called again. Only to be told that the company which the warranty was through had gone out of business and the funds which had been left behind had since been used up.
Basically I got the shaft on that one. Luckily Anacortes Island had an oil refinery there which had a lot of Dodge Dakotas. The local Napa had a starter in stock.
When I purchased my Nitro they offered me an extended warranty at a fantastic deal (70% off). I went for it only because it was an extended warranty from Chysler and not an aftermarket.

When I purchased my Nitro did not buy the extended warranty. Wen is the best time to buy one and from who for the best price. I only have 3K miles.
I'd take the offer letters to your dealer and see which ones they'll honor. Usually, dealers have specific extended coverage & service contract companies they work with. Also check with your insurance company. Some of the larger insurers (like Geico) have Mechanical Breakdown Insurance at very good rates.

I'd recommend not buying the extended warranty when financing the vehicle, unless its offered at a ridiculously low rate. You wind paying for something you can't use until the base warranty expires, not to mention the additional interest you'll pay for the term of your loan.

Most extended warranties require you to have less than 15 months or 15,000 miles on the vehicle to be eligible for coverage. So be sure to check out the details for each plan before you get to far along.

On my last three new Dodges, I got extended coverage for under 1,200 bucks for 7 year/100K coverage. Prices probably vary a great deal depending on your location.

I normally don't buy extended warranties, but I plan on giving this Nitro to my Daughter in a few years and I will not be around to help here when a major repair comes along.

So I bit the bullet and purchased a 7 year warranty. The thing to remember is that the cost of the warranty is much higher if you buy it in 3 years than if you buy it at the time of purchase.

My luck I'll never make a claim in 7 years, but on the other hand when ever I take an umbrella, it never rains.

This is my first new car. I've bought extended warranties on used cars & taken advantage of one only one time on a transmission on an Outback.
The dealer told me that we could extend the warranty at any time. I will be watching the recalls & noting any issues with my Nitro to see if or when it's time to make that extension. Sounds like I should check with my insurance company (Safeco) to see if they offer anything comparable to DMC.
