Scott Burgess / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- The finalists for the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year were announced today during a Detroit Economic Club brunch at Cobo Center.
Car finalists include the Honda Fit small car, the Saturn Aura midsize sedan and the redesigned Toyota Camry sedan.
Truck finalists include the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup, and the Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7 crossover models.
Winners will be announced Jan. 7 during a press conference immediately following opening ceremonies for the 2007 North American International Auto Show.
A panel of 49 automotive journalists selected the finalists.

Wrangler snub means revote
Truck of the Year committee sends out new ballots after four-door Jeep was left off.
Scott Burgess / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- The 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited never had a chance to become the North American Truck of the Year. Not one automotive journalist voted for the new four-door Wrangler. They couldn't because it was mistakenly left off the ballot.
So for the first time ever, the jurors are being asked to vote a second time to determine the North American Truck of the Year. Organizers issued a new ballot to voters this week.
"We just missed it," said John McElroy of Blue Sky Productions and TV host to "Autoline Detroit" and "American Driver." "We're really kicking ourselves here, but we made a mistake and now we're going to fix it."
On Wednesday, the day after announcing the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado pickup and the Ford Edge and Mazda CX7 crossovers were finalists for the North American Truck of the Year, organizers realized the ballots sent to journalists omitted the first-ever four-door Wrangler built in Toledo.
McElroy, one of the seven journalists on the award's steering committee, said it won't be difficult to correct the mistake.
Jurors have been asked to revote for all truck candidates by Tuesday. If the Wrangler Unlimited cracks the top three, it will be added as a finalist without bumping any other finalist. The Silverado, Edge and CX7 are guaranteed to be finalists.
Chrysler applauded the committee's decision to send out a new ballot.
"Hats off to them," said Jason Vines, Chrysler Group's vice president of communications. "They saw they made a mistake and they're doing the right thing by asking for another vote. (The Wrangler Unlimited) deserves a spot on the ballot."
The award is not sponsored by the North American International Auto Show, but it's presented Jan. 7 during the Detroit show. Winners routinely use the award as a marketing tool.
"It's become a very coveted prize," said Vines, in part because no single organization selects the winner, which is chosen by automotive journalists from around North America.
In the past, the award process has run smoothly. Every year, the steering committee draws up a list of eligible vehicles for both car and truck of the year -- more than 60 qualified this year. To become eligible, the vehicle must be all new or significantly redesigned.
That list is then pared to something more manageable. This year's final ballot included 11 cars and 14 trucks, not including the Wrangler Unlimited.
Jurors weigh design, innovation, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value when casting their vote.
The ballots are returned to Deloitte & Touche, where the votes are counted and the winner kept secret.
Finalists for the 2007 North American Car of the Year award are the Honda Fit, Saturn Aura and Toyota Camry.
