The plug in the front on the center console (not sure what it's called exactly), is no longer working. When I plug in my Garmin GPS into the plug, it doesnt send a charge through it making my GPS relatively useless. I know for a fact that it is not the GPS's fault...I have had the cables and cradle replaced already, and I even got an entire new GPS unit under warranty.

Is this a common occuring problem? And would their be an easy fix for this? I dont know if it is a fuse problem or what. Any suggestions? Nitrotech...any answers? I'd rather not make the trip to the dealer if I can fix it myself. What do you guys think?

Get on the "list" for a service manual...........

How do I do this? And the fuses are all in the engine bay on the left side right? On the 3.7?

Do you have a 12v. test probe? or plug another device into another car's cigarette lighter recepticle, and verify the device in that car then, then try it in your car.
Make sure the key is ON, as I am unsure in this is a constantly HOT recepticle. If it doesn't work, it is probally the fuse.
Look in your owners manual for the fuse location and replace with like fuse. And yes, that is the fuse box in the engine bay.

I agree, check the outlet with a meter or a test light. If you don't have one of these, try a different 12 accessory.

There are many variations in 12V plugs and not all work as well.

Once you confirm no power, look at the fuse panel. There is a guide on the cover showing what fuses go to what accessory.

I fixed it! I snooped around in the fuse box and I found a broken fuse for the front power outlet. I replaced it with the fuse for the back 12v outlet for the time being. I will have to stop into an auto parts store for a replacement. How much do these things cost? Cant be more than a dollar...

They are normally in multi packs. Maybe a couple of bucks.

The bigger question is why did it blow?
Im not sure why. It did seem to be in a funny place however... It is hard to describe, but it seemed to be shifted over a slot too far. Ill try to make a diagram

O O
O O
O O O

The fuse was in the far left 2 holes in the bottom row, as shown above, when the rest of the fuses were all over a hole. The row this fuse was in was the only one with 3 slots instead of 2. IDK if anyone was able to follow my description, but I tried haha.

Oh I really haven't paid attention to this on my Nitro but most of the power outlet fuses have 2 positions. You have the option of the power outlet being energized either by the battery, which would be constant, or ignition switched, so there would only be 12 volts present with the ignition switched on.

A can speculate a few scenarios for the blown fuse. The actual socket could be at fault. The item you plugged in short circuits the socket or the current draw is too high. Lastly a defective fuse (yes these exist). Obviously, there could be other reasons but its worth checking out the electronics you plug in there.

Thanks NT. Hmmmm right now, I have my GPS charger plugged into my 12V and the red light on it is on, and the car is off, so I'm assuming that there is a charge going into it. If it is not plugged into my GPS, will it still drain the battery? Is this something I should be worried about and fix?

Also, the defective fuse is definitely broken. The 'thing' inside of it is broken in half. I don't think I have ever plugged anything of high power into that plug before. Only my GPS.

Hey Corsair -

Here's my take on it: The Nitro is a fun car in the sense that you can be sitting in the car with the key out of the ignition, but it still may be set in the 'accessory' position if you have just turned the car off. I think it's a great convenience... my girlfriend hates it. To be sure the car is no longer set to 'accessory', make sure you open the door after turning off the engine. As an alternative, you can just sit in the car for X number of minutes, which you can set in the EVIC.... I think it defaults to 10 or 15 minutes. If the outlet can still power 12V devices, you have the fuse set in the 'constant-on' position. As previously mentioned, you can just put the fuse in the other position within that row to set it to 'accessory' only. It's a personal choice, really.

If it is not plugged into my GPS, will it still drain the battery? Is this something I should be worried about and fix?
In theory, if nothing is plugged into the outlet, there will be no battery drain, even if it is always hot.

Fuses blow on their own all the time. I wouldn't sweat it unless you have to continually replace it. If it blows a couple of times a month, there's something else going on, unless you happen to be really, really unlucky with defective fuses.

Hope that clears up some of your questions.

Aaron, great post. Thanks a lot for clearing things up. :rep: Sounds like as long as the charger is not connected to the GPS while the car is off, I should be OK. Thanks!
