Id get the full time 4wd but im sure the gas milage will be lower and 2wd is fine 90% of the time in my parts.

The nitro is truck based, so it is rwd..and yea: 4x4s typically get slightly lower fuel ratings..but for people who need the ability for all 4 wheels to be powered, its a sacrifice they have to make! :)
The 2wd mode will get you 100% rwd power & transfers power to the front as needed when wheel spin is detected. Kinda like part time awd but based off the rear wheel, while most these day's are based off the front wheels and transfer to the rear as needed which isn't a good in my IMO. 4wd mode is as stated, but most likley not as effecent as a real 4x4 setup which locks with low speed settings.
Per ALLPAR.

The Dodge Nitro 4x4 features a standard part-time four-wheel drive system with the manual transmission and a full-time all-wheel drive system with automatic transmissions. Two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive modes are electronically controlled by a switch in the center console which can be selected at any time with the part-time four-wheel drive system. The full-time all-wheel drive system does not have a 2WD mode and has no console switch.
