Went to Galveston, TX from Royse City, TX (Just east of Dallas) this past week for a Mexican cruise. It took us about 5 hours and about 300 miles each way. I averaged 22.4 mpg both times that I filled up and this was driving between 75 and 80 mph. Ony used the cruise control for about an hour to give my foot a rest. I only have a Magnaflow muffler and a K&N air filter. I was real pleased with the mileage, since my 03 Durango only got 18.4 mpg when we took the same trip last year.

OK now this proves once and for all that the Nitro is not a gas hog.

This should end all complaints. If you can't live with hwy mileage in the 20's don't drive a V6 SUV -- go buy a 4Cyl sedan.

The problem for most people is that they fixate on the around town mileage which is quite unpredictable in all vehicles.

Gas Hog??? NO WAY!

That is right Ken.

My mileage just keeps getting better all the time. I know that it has a lot to do with the constantly rising gas prices that keeps my "Avg Mileage" meter always turned on in the instrument cluster. I have bragged about my gas mileage before many times, but must update you all. In the driving I do up and down this 7,000 foot high valley and over the 8,443 foot pass at Onyx Summit on highway 38 I am now averaging over 21mpg for both city, freeway and mountain driving. That is an average that has been compiled over several months since I last reset my mileage gauge/meter. That is up from the 19 to 20mpg I was getting a few months ago. I now have over 23k miles and have switched from Premium down to middle grade gas due to the high prices.

I think that is great for a boxy V6 with 265hp that I push at a brisk pace and almost never get passed on those mountain roads. I am the one passing 90% of the traffic on that road (since I know it so well) and almost never touch the brake on the way up or down (love that 5speed auto-transmission w/ability to up & down shift with just a flick of the lever to the right or left).

I feel like I upgraded in the fuel economy department. I was in a Suburban and I was only getting 13 to 14 miles per gallon on fillups and that was babying it while I was driving. If I drove it harder and accelerated faster it would get between 11 and 12 miles per gallon at fillups. I do mostly around town driving so my first fillup in the new Nitro it came out to 18.4 miles per gallon.

When I told my grandpa who is a downer at times or negative what my first fuel up mileage was he said "THAT'S IT! Damn Dodges, that's a Dodge for ya." I told him that they estimate highway mileage to get around 24 and once again this is what he says "I get that in my Lincoln and it's got a V8 in it and they can't do better for a V6." So at that point I was just done talking to him about the Nitro. Let him be with his 1994 Lincoln Town Car that is like God to him I suppose. I always hated that car, even when I was 14 when he bought it. I'd rather get 12 miles per gallon in something than drive or own a Lincoln Town Car or any other senior citizens car like that. I know when I get in my 70's if I live that long I will still be owning a 4 wheel drive SUV, if they are still being made anyway at that time, whomknows what is going to happen by then or if the world will even exist then. Right now with Obama as the president and everything that is happening it feels like the end of the world or seems like it is so close like next week.

You tell the government that its not a gas hog!!! The SWINES dinged me $400 BUX gas hog tax when I purchased my 2010:4-flames:
When my mom got a quote on a Charger they wanted to charge her a $1,500 break it off in her butt gas tax! I think it is ridiculous and shouldn't be people's or government's business if someone doesn't want to buy an electric car or a ugle ass Prius that gets a really good gas mileage. And it doesn't deserve an extra tax either. But that is what governement does is try to get more taxes because they are not capable of budgetting money or keeping a budget or control spending nor do they want to. They want more raises and things like health care paid for for them as they wrecklessly spend our tax dollars. Anyway, just my little rant about it!

Update:
My wife has about 80K miles now and just a couple of weeks ago I had to drive her Nitro for a few weeks. Got 23 to 24 mpg.
We have not had any issues during this time other then the roof rails. Had them replaced.
