My Nitro is still low mileage, but I am thinking about my first set of new tires.

I had been thinking about the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires.

I needed tires on my Surburban so I decided to try these out on the old beast. In one word-- fantastic!!

These tires are true off-road tires with an agressive, open tread pattern. They are rated 10/10 in snow and 9/10 off road yet they ride and handle like a street tire. Goodyear claims this balance can be attributed to the Kevlar belts. Whatever it is, it works. Unlike most off-road tires, these tires carry a 50,000 mile warranty.

Once fitted to my Surburban, it felt like a new truck. I easily tackled snow and ice, and the dry road handling was better than any truck tire I have owned. The sidewalls are very stiff and steering response is massively better than any of the last 4 sets of tires that I have had on this high-mileage old truck. They do buzz a little on the highway, but nothing like most off-road tires.

For me, the Nitro is a street 4WD that does occasional off-road duty, and this seems like the perfect tire. If you look at the size chart, they don't have this in the exact same size as stock, but there is a P245/65R17 that is 29.5" and an LT24570R17 size that at 30.5" is about an inch and a half taller than the stock 29.1" tire. I believe that we have had other forum members that have squeezed a 30.5" size tire into the Nitro.

If you have the 16" wheels-- no problem as they have a LT225/75R16 that is 29.3" diam. I don't however think you can get this in a size to fit the RT wheels.

Thanks for the info Ken. Just how much highway sing on the Silent Armour ? Is silent a little misleading?

Silent is a relative term. They buzz slightly above 65MPH, but you have to turn the radio off to hear it. They are clealy much quieter than say BF Goodrich T/A's.

Put it this way, if are running a non-stock exhaust on the Nitro, the purr from the exhaust would drown out the buzz.

What is more amazing is that these tires handle so well and ride to smoothly. Normaly you can feel lots of tread squirm on a tire with such an open tread pattern,

Thanks for the info Ken. Amazing what change in handling a tire change can make. When the Firestone recall was happening I change tires 3 times in 5000 miles to find the right tire for the vehicle.

Yes you are right.

We take tires for granted but when you think about it there are probably only 4 sections of rubber less about 6X8 inches each that control your life.

They had better be really good rubber sections of rubber.
