I finally read the all the ins and outs of the so called limited lifetime powertrain warranty and it got me thinking. Would any of you rather be able to forgo ANY of the warranty to save lets say $8k off of your negotiated price???? What I mean is to NOT have any warranty as soon as you drive off the lot. Then, anything from the regular crap most of us complain about have to take care of ourselves versus fighting with the dealer to make it right.

well a dealer told me (not the one I got my nitro from) that a lifetime or extended warranty is what they call a dental plan, it don't really pay for the expensive stuff..soo I was told right before your factory warranty runs out go to your bank or someone that offers a warranty on cars and get one then, that way ya don't pay interest on it. Now granted I have never done this but it was what I was told.

I went to my dealer, I can buy anytime..

He told me lifetime is a waste after the fact.

it was $900.. for $1600, I could finance that interest free for 1 year too, I had full 7years 70k coverage. for $2500 I could have 85k..

I'd rather have the $1600 policy for 7/70 full, and its xferable and you get a pro-rated credit for the unused portion.

I had the 100K max care warranty on my 01 caravan and it definitly payed for itself (3 trans missions for instance!)

This will soleley depend on how long you plan to keep it & how far you'll drive it....If you're goinf to trade it in in the next 10 years, it probably won't be worth it.
I plan to keep and drive the nitro pretty much forever...My wife puts around 25k a year on a car...I bought the (additional) life time warranty (on top of the major drive train).
My Nitro is covered bumper to bumper, top to bottom, front to back for LIFE.

In the last several new cars (including this one) we have paid for an extended warranty and it has always paid off. Our Grand Cherokee was ridiculously bad about parts having had replaced the entire cooling system and to two six disc changers and the Infinity dash speakers were really bad. Had them changed one time and it only lasted a week before it blew. Window regulators and lock actuators etc...It paid for itself!

For the most part, unless you luck out, remember; they don't sell extended or life time warranties because they are nice guys watching out for you, they sell them because THEY will make money on them. Read the fine print real close.

The additional warranty does not cover wearbles:

brakes, tires, rubber hoses, belts, fluids, upholstrey rubbing through (but they will cover seperated seams) and the like.

The way they make money on the warranty is by people not using them or not keeping the vehicle for a long time.

Most people do not keep a car more than 3-4 years and only put on average mileage...the additional warranty is never tapped into therefore, $$$ are made by the warranty co and the dealership.

If the warranty is used effectively (keeping and driving the car for many years, having more than one item addressed per visit to make the deductible payment effective, AND actually having things repaired instead of letting them go) The consumer can come out way ahead.

On our Caravan, they replaced squeaking interior panels (broken retainers), bad window regulators, leaking AC lines, A rusty coolant line (alone this was over $1000.00), a fogging head lamp, a sticky seat track, 3 tranmissions and much more - all under the extended warranty

I have worked on cars for the last 25 years and STILL get the extended warranty...but I do keep cars for a long time (The Nitro is new but my other car has 180,000 miles on it and still going strong)

The powertrain warranty and the extended lifetime warranty are two different things, right? I'm not clear on all this. Do you have to purchase the powertrain warranty and THEN the extended warranty? Or can you purchase just the extended warranty (which would also cover the things included in the powertrain warranty)? Help! Someone straighten me out, please! We drive vehicles for a long time so I'm thinking I need to do something ...

Worth it from my perspective!

We have always gotten the extended warranty on our vehicles in the past, and it has always proven to pay for itself in the long run. The caravans (being front wheel drive) in our cold Winnipeg winters would invariably have issues with cv joint covers cracking in the sub-zero weather. So the extended powertrain warranty helped....always. We keep the vehicles for about 8 years and has paid for itself over and over again. I do not hesitate to get it everytime we get a new vehicle and have done so with the Nitro. I have found that after the warranty has run out, even the smallest issues can often turn out to be quite expensive. So yes, definately worth it!

for now, Chrysler is offering a life time warranty on the drive train...it covers internally lubricated parts on the engine, transmission and the axles...

An additional lifetime bumper to bumper can be purchased, since Chrysler covers the drive train, the additional lifetime is discounted and covers virtually everything...normally, you couldn't purchase a liftime warranty - only 100k. With the life time, they had to have smoe incentive to purchase an additional warranty so, they offer lifetime - I bought it and will keep the Nitro virtually forever...why not - it will never wear out now.
