New here, I own a 2007 nitro 3.7l SLT, for the last few weeks I've noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine, did some research and discovered it had something to do with the rocker arms, something that apparently happens a lot in dodge models, nitros, chargers and Chrysler 300s specifically. Last two days the oil light kept coming on, despite the fact that there were adequate levels of oil. Just lost acceleration on the highway, pulled over to find this under the hood:

Can anyone tell me what this is and what exactly happened Here? Oil all over the place. Not much of a mechanic, thanks in advanced.

    Oh that's ugly!

Looks like a rocker arm broke and got thrashed around under the valve cover. Busted a couple of holes in the cover in the process. That engine will definitely need to be torn apart, at least for inspection to see what kind and how much damage has been done. If you dropped a valve, you may have lower end engine damage as well. If your're lucky... Top end damage may be all you have.

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, but I've been in your shoes and it truly sucks! :(

Welcome to the forum ShaneThomas. When you have a chance, head over to the Newbie Section and say "Hi".
Tell us a little about yourself and your ride.
That way we can welcome you all proper like.

Unfortunately, I have to totally agree with Metaldog's assessment.
At the very least you have top end damage. From the angle of the Cam, it appears the Cam itself may have snapped.
Only way to know for sure how much more damage there is, is to tear it down.

Hey man, I'm sorry to see this, but consider yourself lucky.
You're in USA, this is US mainstream engine used from Nitro over Jeep Liberty (only engine in US in this model) to RAM.
At worst you'll get one from wrecked car and it won't cost fortune.

Wow! Remove the valve cover and inspect. The lash adjusters are not the best. One could have stayed extended breaking the rocker arm. Or a valve spring broke. Once you take off the cover, post a pic.
