Hey all...

It's been forever since I posted, this summer's been crazy. Literally filled in an open FT position (not counting the over FT postion I already have) at work, which has left me no personal time. Two job's for the same great salaried price?? Anyhow, just means I haven't made it on here for awhile.

My question is this. A few months ago I took my nitro into my service dealer with an exhaust-leak sound. They tore it all apart and stated that all 4 of my manifold bolts had gotten too hot and had broken. Now, with the exhausting work shedule, and the fact that the dealer is over 150 miles away (plus they didn't have the parts), it took another month to get it fixed.

Anybody else ad this problem? It's just hard for me to believe that under NORMAL driving conditions this could happen. Of course, all was fixed under warrenty - just cost me two vacation days.

I've already scoured the forum since my return and see no mention of this.

No, not that other members have said. But, I do remember other members that were writing about sounds coming from their engine that they thought were bad lifters. It could be what they were hearing was blown or leaking manifold gaskets. Several cylinders blowing out could easily sound like noisy lifters.

StreetDancer, what exactly were you hearing again?

Typically an exhaust leak at the cylinder head to exhaust manifold is described as a clicking type sound. As for the failure of the manifold bolts there are some possibilities for them to fail. The manifold itself could be warped causing stress on the bolts, also the bolts may have been cross threaded from factory, and even defective causing them to be brittle. Or the bolts weren't properly torqued at the factory. This is all speculation.

Of all the 3.7L I've worked on, this is the first I've heard of broken studs, especially 4 of them. Maybe one or two is common and usually insufficient torque was the cause.

Did you bring the Nitro in more than once for this leak issue?

Is so perhaps the dealer over torqued the bolts to fix it on your first trip, which later caused the bolts to fail?

I have seen this sort of issue before when a mechanic tries to do the "easy" fix first rather than the right fix.

Ken,

It was only brought in once to diagnose the problem, tear it apart and order the parts....they then put it all back together and it took me about a month to be able to get it back in.

Someone else asked about the break-in time. ALL new car procedures were followed.

I have been towing my boat over a few mountain passes before this happened but it's WAY under the towing capacity (see gallery) and and the "TOW" function was used when there was the possibility of more strain.

Dodge said it was a factory problem and all's well now, was just curious if anybody else had this problem.

HighVoltage.....as for what I was hearing it sounded like exhaust but very loud. (My wife says it sounded like a POS Jaloppy). Also, there would be a fuel smell shortly after initial start-up that would later dissipate (either that or the CO levels in my brain got high enough I no longer noticed).

Kind of wished I had this problem as it I could weasle a free or reduced cost on installing my headers to save me the aggravation.

LOL :chuckle:
