So I upgraded to the latest version of the OS and Gracenotes with no problems and spent the better part of a sunday afternoon copying 6 GB of songs (wma and mp3) to the HDD. The problem is that no matter how I select a song or playlist, it will not play the file. They do not have DRM on them, I select them, it says "by playlist" or "by album" with the arrows to switch tracks, but never displays the time left on the song or the title on the left. The right has what I selected, but nothing plays... period.

Any suggestions?

From my experience, the MyGig has occasional issues when copying files over. Although this is real low-level advice, what I have found to work is to first delete all the music that's giving you trouble, then copy the music again in smaller groups. In the past, I've copied several albums at once, and had trouble. I needed to delete them all, and the second time around I copied one at a time, making sure each album (playlist) worked properly before copying the second one.

I know it doesn't really provide an answer to why they won't play, but its the best I can do.

Hmm...do they play okay on your PC?

I recently found a new trick to adding music to MyGIG. I downloaded the latest version of Apple iTunes (it's free). Then I rip the CDs to my PC HD instead of directly to the MyGIG. iTunes named the music in several CDs that MyGIG just listed as "track01.WMA" or whatever. I even have the latest Gracenote database installed but that didn't help in some cases.

Anyway, after ripping them to the PC HD I copy whatever music I want to a USB flashdrive and then upload it to MyGIG. Even with adding these extra steps it goes a lot faster than trying to burn a CD directly to MyGIG, which used to take 12 minutes or so for each one. The bonus is that I can combine multiple CDs as one upload to MyGIG and it will only create one folder. I can still sort the music by album, artist, etc., because iTunes adds that info when I burn it to the PC HD.

I'll have to try uploading 3 or 4 songs and see if those work. I uploaded 6 GB of songs (that play fine on any of my computers and MP3 players) using a USB stick. It took a few trips since I only have a 1 GB USB stick.

Well, I uploaded a few songs from a DVD this time and it still didn't work. It read them from the DVD and played them fine, just not from the hard drive. Do you guys hear a clicking/activation sound sometimes coming from the engine/dash when performing operations on the myGIG?

Outside of the typical CD / DVD spinning noises, or the sound that a harddrive normally makes when writing data - no.

krang, did you try uploading just a few songs from a USB flash memory drive? I'd try putting a few mp3's into a folder on the root of a flash drive, and verify that they can successfully upload onto the HDD, and then be sure that they can play off the HDD, as well. Should that fail, then there could very well be something wrong.

Do you still have access to your navigation maps? The surest sign of HDD failure is the inability of the navigation system to load when you turn on the car.
