So I just upgraded to the latest version of the myGIG OS and gracenote DB. Everything went very smoothly, I was actually impressed with how easy it was to do. After the upgrade I noticed there was a button under the navigation menu to select navigation updates. When I viewed the information it said to go to navteq.com and check for updates for my VIN. I plugged in the information for Dodge, but no Nitro is listed. Is there where I should be going to get updates?

Would this Chrysler group DVD work: http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/[email protected]&JumpTo=OfferList ?

No. I called Navteq, and they will be available in about a months time frame. That Map will not work. ITs for the older model.

200 bucks is a little pricey for me to update, but if you're driving around in a no-man's land, maybe the above info will be of some help.

Update: I went to the website, and it effectively redirects you to the regular navteq site.

I agree 100%! I really like the Navigation on MyGig and am very happy with it, but I think 200 bucks for map updates is a gouge to the end customer. In my work, we use DeLorme mapping program (I have the version that includes phone numbers) and to get a full update of latest map files is only $60. In fact, I think you can get the full latest version (including phone numbers) for about $70. How can there be a $130 price difference in newest map info between those programs. The only reason I can think of for any price difference is that DeLorme does deal with much greater volume, but still - $200 is a LOT for updates. I wouldn't mind paying that much if they gave me yearly updates for say, the next five years or so. Awell. You going to spring for the updates, Aaron?

To answer your question, Dayton -

Absolutely not at a $200 price point. As it is now, we can already swap the hard drives and view all files stored on the MyGig hard drive on computers. I foresee within 6 months (maybe a year) the ability to update the navigation database without needing to drop that kind of cash. On a somewhat related note, I also predict the emergence of user-customized color schemes and unlocked Destination Entry (not to mention DVD playback) while in motion.

Hey guys the problem is there are several radios for the Nitro. Some have DVD updates and Some update on the fly off the Sat system. Ever wonder why such a large part of the Hard drive is not availible???? There is a buffer for the Sat updates as your on the road. I ran from North Dakota to Mesa AZ and then to Deepwater NJ. I have the system that updates by the Sat. I was trying to upgrade my Hard drive and found hooks that allow the sat system to use the drive to store data..

Are you saying that the map files are being updated "on the fly"? I've not heard of this. I'm not sure what you mean by Sat updates, specifically. This would be great if it were so, but I have a feeling its not. Anyone else ever heard of this?

I doubt they do the updates on the fly; out of all my friends that have handheld GPS units every one gives the option to purchase new maps and install via SD card or USB.

I agree with the comment earlier, sooner or later this is going to be "unlocked" via software. Until then I'll just wait patiently :)

The System stores only Sat infos on the hdd. The System needs to know wich Sats are avaialable in the particular area. It's like e-mule and the server file. you allways get updates with new servers and thats how the Gig works with new sats to use. I think its clear that not allways the same sats have a connection on every area of this planet... ;-)

Navteq Navigation Update

I just got my "special" offer for my Mygig navigation update. Anyone who thinks I am going to spend $200 for this update is not playing with a full deck. What are they thinking??? You can get brand new TomToms, etc. with the latest maps for under $150. Is it just me or have the Navteq folks totally lost their minds? I think $70-$90 is a more viable price point. Has anyone out there purchased this? Is anyone going to?

Yeah.... no way I'm going to spend more than it costs to get a decent standalone GPS to update the maps. I'm still debating whether or not its even worth the extra 4 bucks a month to get Sirius Traffic along with the radio. Although I must say... the one time it said 'Recalculating route due to updated traffic information' I was stunned. Packaging the traffic info into the 1 free year was a pretty clever move on their part. Now I just hope Navteq gets its head on straight.
