Well folks, as some of you may have read, I took my Nitro into the dealer last month for its 6 month oil change as well as re the intermittent loss of volume and volume control on the MyGig system. The service center as well as the GM said that there were problems with the system (hinting at a possible recall). They put in the new system last Monday, and behold, just yesterday it did the same thing. I decided to take the car to the dealer with the situation as it was occuring (maybe they could do some sort of diagnostic, I thought). Anyhow, they checked it out, and again are ordering a new one for me. It seems that this is happening on quite a few vehicles, and to say they are getting just a bit tired is being kind.

Sidenote: I met my salesman on the way out, and we chatted a bit. He said: "Your vehicle is here more than I like to see." So I explained about the MyGig system foul-up as well as the leak I had in the hatch window. He asked that I talk to him when these things come up, since the GM is pretty "protective" of me. I told the salesman the third time is hopefully the charm, because if not, I just want the plain old sat/u-connect system without myGig...and they can foot the bill for a third party alternative. He went one further and said that he is going to suggest that Chrysler provide me extended warranty, or the option of a new vehicle, considering the other issues that I have had. If this were any other salesman, I would think they are being nice, but I am sure my salesman means it. In fact, he told me to call him when I am coming in for unit #3 so we can get things down in writing.

Also, told the service guy about the upgrade (they now have a CD, not sure which number), and he suggested that I do not install it while the vehicle is under warranty. Someone did do that and fried the radio, and the dealership said they would fix it only that one time. Based on how they have been taking care of the various issues on my Nitro, I am going to refrain from upgrading the myGig - at least right now!

Sorry for the long post. Hope it was at least informative, if not helpful.

Latest on the fun...

well folks, have taken my R/T back to the dealer on Tuesday for unit #3 - or so I thought. Got a call yesterday asking me if I used an IPod or mp3 player in the aux system (no.)...asked why and wasn't given a very logical answer - "just wondering, checking all the bases." Told me they ordered an amp. I asked why, since the amps seem perfectly fine to me - never any shorting out or fuzz or buzz. Just said "we are going through this logically." Hmmm...I like my dealer and service, but this seems like they are grabbing at straws.

Anyone have any idea about why they would do this with the fact that two units (the original and a replacement) have had times of muting without the ability to control volume?

I am very close to becoming disenchanted with this vehicle after it has had the following in the last 6 months: roof rattle that was fixed by taking down the headliner and readjusting the brackets, etc. for the moonroof; a leak in the rear hatch window; now more rattling in the rear, and a odd sound at the drivers door (like plastic crinkling) every time I hit a bump or rough patch (or not!)...add that to the MyGig....well, baby is losing her luster!:(

Rich, when you say mute and no volume control, could it be your MyGIG unit(s) were doing the same as mine. Occasionally, mine will be playing along (songs on the hard drive only) and just stop playing. When this happens - total silence. This most often occurs when changing between tracks. But all I have to do is press the next and back button on the left hand back side of the steering wheel and mine goes back to working. This happens once or twice a week. If I choose to ignore this it will remain fixed on the same song title until I flick it one way or the other. This only happens when playing from the hard drive. I think the hard drive, or the software more likely, is simply freezing up. It doesn't happen very often, so it doesn't bother me much. Otherwise, I have had no trouble from MyGIG.

Tim,

Thanks for the reply. The muting happens at the point of starting the engine. I cannot get the volume controls (on the steering wheel and the unit) to operate. There is no sound, sometimes there may be the indicator, other times there is an empty space where the volume indicator usually shows on the screen. I can change from Sirius to AM to FM to HDD to CD and even to NAV and the screen switches appropriately, just no sound.

I have to turn the Nitro off and restart in order for it to come back on.

This may not be credible but I suspect the issue is related to interference. The system has mute functions for U-Connect and NAV so it may be possible that it percieves ambiant signals at times and mutes out.

Rich, ask your dealer to be a bit more proactive. They should try installing one of the MyGIG units that failed you into another Nitro and see if it works OK. I suspect there is a gremlin in your Nitro in a component that works with but is not within your head unit. All the MyGIG units would not have done the exact same thing without reacting to another cause. The downgrade to a regular radio may react similarly unless they pinpoint the true issue. Other than MyGIG, is there any other issue with your Nitro?

Electronically, not that I can tell - no other issues. There are the various problems that I mentioned in the previous post here: rattling, leaking, etc. But most seemed fixed relatively quickly. Seems like if not one thing it's another.

They put a new amp in (still cannot figure the logic in that), and are keeping it till early next week, since they cannot get the system to act up like it did for me (and I even brought it in while it was muted to see if they could do a diagnostic). Guess it is wait and see. Thanks for the possible scenario, btw. I hope there is not a gremlin (esp electric) since the GM and I will need to chat a bit to see where this is going...

Cautiously Optimistic

I really like my dealer and service folks! The service manager took a good 15 minutes to talk with me about what they did and why they did it. Seems that the issue was an amp - seems it wasn't getting the "wakeup call" that goes through the can bus when I started the Nitro. He shared with me in a very understandable way the basics of the process between the MyGig and the amps and the ignition. It made sense to me! Told him it seems that you have to start think of vehicles as computer networks on wheels.

They also tightened my suspension, and anything else that could be tightened as well as took care of all the doors -taking care of a TSB about issues inside the doors that can cause rattles, etc. - just to make sure. I did not have my baby for a week, but I think that the time at the dealer was well worth it. I don't go back for my next oil change till March, so at least I will have it a month to see if all systems are go.

I am hoping that this is the last big issue for awhile - only had it now 7 months and the trips to the dealer have been a bit wearisome. At least they have a nice open snack bar!

peace,
Rich

What was wrong with your suspension to where it had to be tightened?

Good question! I told them about the rattling that I heard, and I guess they just wanted to make sure everything was as "secure" as possible. Then again, I was just happy that as I was driving home, I didn't hear any rattling!

I had the same exact volume problem this morning. First time it's happened to me in the 10 months and 18,000 miles of my Nitro's life. A friend tipped me to some people on a Jeep forum that had similar problems with their MyGig's volume disappearing and it was fixed by reseating a couple fuses. Some just had it fixed by turning the vehicle off for a while and it worked when they came back. I'm heading to the dealer on Monday to find out if it's related to why my nav doesn't come up and just says "Navigation is activating."

Hello, I bought my 2008 RT on 12/31/07 and had only had it for one week before my first bout with the radio occurred. At first I thought it had something to do with the remote start...but then after it happened a few times, I learned to shut off the vehicle and wait a few minutes and then the radio and all of its functions would come back on. I called the dealership and they told me to bring it in however they never alluded to the fact that they had seen a re-occurring problem with the MyGig system(typical). To make a long story short I haven't had time to take it in to the dealership yet, however I shouldn't have to pray every time I turn on the car on that the radio will not be frozen : ( . I'd say the problem of no volume/function has happened to my R/T at least half a dozen times. It definitely seems like a recall is necessary on the amp if that's what the problem is. Hey Rich, all the details you wrote with regard to the radio have been a great help! I have had the same exact issue and it's brand new. Are you still problem free now that the amp has been changed? Regards, Lauren(the wife : )

Hi Lauren,
At this point things are fine - but I still hold my breath when I start the vehicle! At this point it is back in the shop with some unrelated issues, and I am actually in the process of working toward a trade for this Nitro because of the many issues with it. Best of luck with your!

Peace,
Rich
