*** Just a note that might come in handy ***

As you can see from posts in this thread I also had problems with an engine check light and could never pull a code. I went to a local auto store and bought a new gas cap as this thread suggested and still had the same issue. Finally ended up going to the dealer and they checked for a code. Said it was an EVAP issue and suggested I change the gas cap. Explained that I had already. Said they would clear the code and if the problem came back they would look into further. I explained I had already done that and problem came back. The Tech said only other suggestion is to purchase an OEM gas cap from the parts dept to see if that might help. I purchased an OEM gas cap and my problems were solved. The OEM gas cap solved the problem. Maybe this might help some of you down the road.
Thanks for getting back to us on this drvette. This kind of information is always useful for folks struggling with the same issue.

Thanks for the feed back on the fix to your issue drvette. :rep: This may have been solved with just a new rubber gasket on your old cap. But glad to hear you are back on the road enjoying your ride again.

I sure need some help. The check engine light came on. I have a 2007 Nitro. I had it read and the number came out P0440. I replaced gas cap. Engine light is still on. What next?
I had the same engine light code, on my 03 Dodge Ram and when doing some research I found that If replacing the cap doesn't work, there may be a canister that is some where around your gas tank that connects to the gas tank, this is that whole evaporative system deal from what I understand a sensor could be bad and you may need to replace this... I know that it was on a dodge ram that I found this info, but I don't think that Dodge strays to far from there basic systems with different models.. But please don't take my word for it do some more research, just thought it might point you in the right direction...

P0456 strikes again!

So yesterday the cel comes on. My Actron OBDII scanner says operating error when I plug it into the (new to me) Nitro. So instead I run up to the Advance Auto parts and they gave me the code. I pulled out my Android in the parking lot, searched on here and came to this thread. We checked the gasket for wear, replaced the gas cap correctly and reset the code. There is some sand around the inlet so I'm going to sponge that off today and try the vaseline trick. Does that work?

To be continued!! Thanks for the helpful info you guys!

Did this work for you? This is interesting, less than two weeks after I thanked drvette for getting back to us with the fix and then you post this, I also have the same issue.

On the way home from work today my MIL came on. Did the on-off-on-off-on key thing and got the same P0456 code. I'm going to try to clean the cap threads and the filler neck, plus a dab of vaseline before I buy an OEM cap. But it's nice to know a cheap fix exists if cleaning doesn't. I'll let you know.

ottawa - This has worked for me! So far so good. There was some sand all in the inlet area and I cleaned that off as well. My rubber gasket was a bit smooshed and cleaning it and putting the vaseline has given it some new life. As a matter of fact when I put gas today, the gas cap did the usual clicking instead of the grinding noise it was doing. So far the CEL has not come back on. But that doesn't mean that I fixed the issue. I still say to be continued, with best hopes... but so far so good!! Hope this helps. Scar has been totally right.

The code is back. :( Came on yesterday.

What's worse is when I didn't clear it out, today the gas pedal was super delayed almost like I do have a little vacuum leak. But, we have checked almost everything. Should I just spend the money and buy a new OEM gas cap? Once I cleared the code myself this morning, its running perfect again. I'm at a loss. Did a quick check of vacuum and fuel hoses. Found more sand. Pulled apart the air cleaner and found even more sand. Should I continue that search?

Help! :thk:

Awful mysterious. This car is a perfect running baby until P0456. I did the oil, flushed the radiator, painting the calipers today so we can finish the brakes, I'm literally babying it. Swear.

OH plus, a friend taught me how to use the light show to see my code myself without my scanner. Hold reset button, turn key on 2 secs then on/off twice fast. Made me laugh that my timing was off. :loser1:

Scar,
How do I find and put a new rubber gasket on my gas cap? The guys at the auto parts store looked at me like I was dumb when I asked for a gasket lol

Curious if I should take that route just in case at this point.. Thanks again for all of yalls help!

becca, have a look at the gasket that is around the neck filler under the gas cap, not on the gas cap. That's what was going on with mine. It had become a bit stretched upwards and deformed. I just cleaned it, repositioned it and everything was fine.

Sand everywhere... Not a good thing.
I do not have a source for a rubber gasket for the fuel cap. The cheapest I found on line is $21. Right after I got my rig, I purchased a locking cap from Schuck's(O'reilly auto parts). It's still working great after 6 years.

With that much sand everywhere you may need to drop the EVAP canister and see if it is all sanded up as well.
See this thread, lots of good info on the canister and Evaporative System Integrity Module with Pics. You may have to clean all this up if sand got inside. You can also see the area that ottawanitro is referring to.

Hi guys!!
Very sorry I've been away so long! :shy:

Ottawa - mine does seem crushed, but not quite deformed. Going to head that direction.

Scar - I think the EVAP may be causing the throttle to be unresponsive when my little monster is cold. I'm heading to that article right now.

Thanks so much for not giving up on me. All of y'alls help has been SO SO valuable.

It will almost certainly be the ESIM on yr purge cannister, this is a very common problem. You can pick one up on EBay for $50, it's not a very difficult job either so even with basic mechanical skills you will be fine. Also get yourself an oeb2 code reader, bout $50 for a basic one. You will need to turn the code off after the repair is finished, plus you will be glad you bought, Trust me you will use it again in the future. All the best mate.
If you need any help fell free to message me. Cheers
