First I want to say hello to everyone on this site. You all seem to be real friendly compared to other auto sites I have been on.
I wanted my first post on this site to be a happy one unfortunately its not. I want to start off by saying that I am absolutely in love with my Nitro. For the first week I owned it my wife couldn't get me out of it. Now I can't look at it without feeling sick.
I am 27 years old and this not the only car that I have purchased but it is by far the nicest and the most expensive. It is a 2007 SXT and had only 12,100 miles on it when I bought it. At 12,300 everything started to go wrong.
I took it for a trip to Gettysburg, PA which is approximately 100 miles from my house. It got there fine and drove fine for the whole weekend. Coming home I noticed that the car was louder than normal but didn't think too much about it. Then the check engine light came on and the car started to sound like what would best be described as a diesel. Then the electrical light came on followed by the stability control turning itself off. Then the power steering went out and the car just rolled to a stop. All of this happened in a matter of 30 seconds about 20 feet from the highway on ramp. I called Chrysler Tow line and they were very helpful getting a truck out to me. They towed the car to the nearest dealership which was in Waynesboro, PA.
To fast forward a bit here apparently one of the valve springs popped out into the shaft that the piston travels in and shattered the piston. It also bent one of the valves in a 90 degree angle. The young mechanics at this dealership were apparently very amused by this because they were all taking pictures of it with their camera phones.
They replaced the whole engine in fear that any original parts could be damaged by metal shrapnel from the shattered piston, but instead of ordering a whole engine the ordered it piece by piece and had their 23 year old mechanic build it. Good practice for him but not good for my nerves.
The car has not driven right since. It doesn’t have the power that it once had and the transmission is not right. It’s an automatic and when it would shift from third to fourth the tachometer would hit 6,000rmps. Then it started to do it in between all of the gears.
I took it back into the shop and they apparently have no clue what is wrong with it. I have gone to the shop each morning because I like to be BSed to my face instead of on the phone and I get the same answer each time “We don’t know what is wrong with it."
So at this point I don’t know what to think. I just made the first payment yesterday and I have no car in my driveway to admire like I once did. I have been talking to a lawyer but apparently there isn’t much that can be done since the vehicle is under warranty.
The whole situation has been real disappointing and depressing. The warmer weather is finally here and I have a box of Mopar parts but I have no car to put them on. I will cut off this post before it is way too long even though this was the short version of the story. :shakehead:
