Has anyone already done an oil change on the CRD engine? Where is the oil filter located? What type of filter is it? Does the plate which covers the bottom of the engine bay have to be removed? I also do not see a way that a hydraulic jack can be used for lifting the center front of the car :i_rolleyes:.

I know, that these questions seem strange. I never had to ask them with any other car I have owned either.

Many thanks for helping,
Roland

I'm able now to answer my own question since I did my first oil change on my 2008 Nitro SXT CRD.

First of all, the 2.8L diesel engine uses an oil filter cartridge instead of the common screw-on type oil filter. The cartridge has MOPAR part number 68032204 AB, is made in Austria and it cost me 48 Swiss Francs (~ US$ 45 ). Secondly, the cartridge sits in a housing that is accessible from the top of the engine bay. The plastic cap of the housing must be removed with a socket wrench in order to replace the filter cartridge.

Incidentally, the drain screw for the engine oil is not the common hex bolt either but rather needs an 8 mm Allen wrench for removal. The metal plate which covers the bottom of the engine bay does not have to be removed in order to get access to the drain screw since there is a cutout in the cover for draining the oil (although, I have removed the cover just to see how the engine looks from underneath ;)).

Best Regards,
Roland

P.S.: I have also found a link that features a list of low ash oils that are required for the Nitro's diesel engine with the particle filter: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

Look towards the bottom of the page for MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 approved oils. Any 5W-30 of these will do, although the 20'000 km change interval of a MB 229.51 oil correlates better with the service interval of the Nitro's diesel engine (the change interval of a MB 229.31 oil is specified with 15'000 km).

Well done, a job I have to do soon also. I'm not familiar with modern Euro Turbo deisel servicing.

Not many brands of suitable 0W-40, or 5W-30 lo ash synthetic oils available in the New Zealand Aftermarket either. Some how doubt that Repco will have oil filter elements either, but could be worth the effort.

Franchise dealer wants between $350-$400 for oil/oilfiter only service, including usual computer scans, and wiper/washer top ups.

I will also remove skid plate to have a look see, and clean up any oil spills caused during service.

This is some excellent information. I am close to the 20,000km mark for my first service. I am wondering if I can use Royal Purple synthetic oil or not. Anyone know? I have my services for free for the first 50,000km from Dodge here in Kaiserslautern.

Yes, Well done Roland. Thank you. I'v spent ages trying to get this 'simple' information. Thanks for an excellent script. I will definitely be doing my own basic servicing and look forward to changing the oil. The franchise dealer in my NZ town has a brand new 5 star premises (5 or 6 franchsie brands along with Chrysler). It is so 'up-market & flash' it makes you feel intimidated rather than welcome!. No doubt this is why they 'rip off' their clients for servicing..to pay for the Hilton style premises. Crazy, they have lost the plot. Anyway..I will be buying the filters off them because a I cant find them anywhere else?. As for the oil.. I think I will be using Elf Solris RNX 5w-30. Cheers mate.

I think that I read in this thread that the Nitro CRD does not require synthetic oil.

Here in the US, my '06 Liberty CRD manual requires the the use of 0W-40 0r 5W-40 Synthetic oil.

Also my filter appears to be back of the engine block under the vehicle. My filter looks like a spin on and is Mopar # 05072720AA.

I wonder if VM changed the engine from '06 to '07?

Question...is the drain plug obvious underneath?
This should answer your question:

"Incidentally, the drain screw for the engine oil is not the common hex bolt either but rather needs an 8 mm Allen wrench for removal. The metal plate which covers the bottom of the engine bay does not have to be removed in order to get access to the drain screw since there is a cutout in the cover for draining the oil."

Nitro CRD HAS TO HAVE fullly synthetic engine oil. what you may have read was totally wrong.

Mobil 1 5-30w went into mine this afternoon.
The oil filter on the 08 VM Motori CRD engine is located at the top, at the front just left of centre and is a canister type with I think a 20mm hex head.

One of the easiest oil filters I have ever had to get to.

However the 8mm allen socket for the sump plug was a different story, it was in so tight I went to my local garage and they removed it using 8mm allen socket with wrench, will order one of those.

Thanks Roland for the tips, well recieved.
Not much info on this forum re; CRD as the US don't have them I believe....they are missing out big time.

PS. I do believe the 2.8 VM Motori is now used in the latest London taxis with great reviews!

I clearly read in my manual that my Liberty requires Synthetic 5W-30 (Mobile 1 seems to be the only one in the US that has that viscosity.

My remarks refer to what I thought I saw on this formum and I was questioning that based on my manual. Sorry if my post confused any one.

So again, for the record USE ONLY SYNTHETIC OIL IN THE CRD!!!

Many thanks piggott12 for this information. I just ordered 2 oil filter elements through http://www.wholesalemopar.com. Their price per filter is US$ 23.35 plus US$ 10.00 for shipping within the US (I will be in the US and can bring them back with me), so it's about half the price the dealer would charge me over here in Switzerland .

Will they get some soon enough to help you?
I tried to tell them that I will EXPORT these filters from the US to Switzerland myself, but they just respondend with saying that they do not stock these filters. It sounded like they are not allowed to supply these filters to customers. I do not get it. I though that the Nitro's 2.8L VM Motori Diesel engine is also put into some Jeep models that are sold in the US, or am I wrong here?

Regards,
Roland
