Hey all. I'm a notoriously stingy individual, and vowed never to buy a NEW vehicle. After my wife was T-boned in our Plymouth minivan, I decided a brand new Nitro will be the best remedy. Love that styling!! I'm an airbrush painter, and can't wait to get my brushes on those body panels! Anyway, I've found my vehicle. It's almost exactly what I want, but I was planning on the 2x4. The one I found is the 4x4. The sticker is $29,500. Having never bought a new car, I'm hoping to find out how much wiggle room the dealer's going to have with me here... I've been told to go in with $5000 in my pocket and offer him $24,000... But I don't want to be insulting, and I don't want to get 'had'. Anyone got any ideas? And I'll be posting pics as soon as I get iit!!! Look forward to talking to you all...

Welcome to the site!

Well, i have to say.. 24,000 probably isn't reasonable, but couldn't hurt to ask! From what I've seen, the MSRP (sticker price usually) is almost 10% higher than invoice. With that in mind, the dealer invoice price is probably $26500. They're probably not going to budge below that because Nitro's are selling well.

I also wanted the 4x2 RT (since i have absolutely NO use for the 4x4 here in california =) - and i'm not a snow boarder or anything so no trips really to the snowy mountains). So, i custom ordered it and it's on a train right now. Hopefully I'll see it soon! (been almost 8 weeks so far!).

What I suggest is to find your own financing first. Capital One has a 6% interest rate if you intend to finance the balance over the $5000 and assuming you have good credit. Apply for it, get them to overnight you the check (costs you $15 for that service) and so you can write the check at the dealership. This will prevent the dealer from signing you up with their OWN financing which can be much higher than that 6-6.5% rate that Capital One will give you. They can try to offer their own financing to beat that 6% and if they do, great! if not, no loss. otherwise they'll just sign you up at whatever rate they want to toss at you. And if you're IN the dealership just inches away from your new vehicle, you'll probably sign up (that's their hope) at whatever rate they throw at you. Remember, the dealer gets paid for that financing from the bank they use. THe bank can offer the dealer a rate of say 6%. Then the dealer offers it to you at 7.9%. They get the difference to them in profit.

Just my $0.02

Hi!

We just bought a new Khaki SXT w/ C pkg. Sticker was $24,950 and we paid $23,850 with no D&H costs. We saved around $1500 with Costco, $1100 plus no dealer handling costs. Using the Costco new car buyer feature was easy, quick and painless! :D

Go for it, Critical Air! I paid $22,900 for my loaded SLT so it's all dependant on where your located & what dealer your going thru, and how popular the Nitro is in your area.

Lookin forward to seeing your handywork on your new ride!

The internet has made price negotiation easier.

Go to www.************, pick out the model and exact options of what you are buying and you will see the MSRP and dealer invoice along with dealer "holdback"

Generally most dealers will sell for invoice cost or invoice + 600 or so which is the dealer holdback.

Hold firm and get ready to walk out if they don't deal.

Hey Critical Air, all the dealer wants is your money so yeh be insulting and start low. If they want a sale and you stand your ground you should get a good discount. I got $2000 off mine, they gave me the Chrysler employee discount because I knew people who work at Chrysler here in Windsor (caravan and pacifica built here).
Try and get the employee discount, they have certificates they can use for you.
Anyway enjoy the Nitro...Go Orange it's THE only way to go....

Here in calgary I brought them down $1500 and it took an afternoon of my time.

Really it depends on the market you're in.

In Calgary the Nitros seem to be selling quite well and deals are harder to come by.

The economic boom here is not helping anyone to get a deal.

An update...

Well, I'm going in to see a dealer tomorrow, after A LOT of research. The Nitro is NOT selling well in this area, and the 18 dealers I have within 50 kilometres have a total of 152 of 'em sitting there, and have been for the last couple of weeks. There's 2 I'm interested in on this dealer's lot, and another I like about 45 Kms away, but they can always do a dealer trade. I've read all the articles, know my price points, am ready to walk away at a moments notice, and the Ace up my sleeve is that my dad buys a car from this guy every year and a half to two years. (I don't take after him at all in that respect...) I'll keep you posted, and hopefully have pics next time!

If you have not made up you mind, think about the 6 speed instead of the auto if you are thinking about the SXT.

I test drove all 3 Nitros and there is a night and day difference beteween the 6-speed and the 4-spd auto in terms of performance. So far the 6speed seems to have much better in-town MPG than others who post their automatic MPG.

When I drove the 4 speed auto, it never seemed to be in the right gear until I was on the highway. My .02, but then again I am partial to manual transmissions.

Manual vs. Auto..

Actually, I'm partial to the stick, especially since the auto is a $1500 option! (What can I say, I'm Scottish!?) But of those 152 Nitros, only 2 are standards! What gives? I prefer to be in control of my vehicle, instead of point-and-shoot... Oh well..

Don't forget about the end of the month

I just bought and SLT 4x4 this past weekend and got a great deal because it was the last day of the month and they needed to make their numbers. I also used a Partner program through my company which started the negotiations at 1% over invoice. Another thing they like to do is clear off what's on their lot. If they don't have exactly what you want but are willing to compromise on a feature or two, you can get a better deal.

Or you can take that one step further & go to one of the dealers in the running for the title of the "World's largest Dodge dealer". I believe Dave Smith in Kellogg, ID has won the title for the last few years & there is at least one other in the midwest who is up there. The deals they offer at the end of the year will boggle your mind. We've taken advantage of them the last 2 yrs & gotten $2500 & $4000 below their invoice each time.
They have an offer to pick anyone up at the Spokane, WA. or Coeur d'Alene, ID. airport, feed them lunch & send'em home in a new rig. Everytime I've been there I've met people from all over the United States there.

The amount of inventory they have on hand at any given time is unreal. Over 3500 cars on 17 lots on any given day. They put GPS locators on every car so they can keep track of where they are!

That is why I had to order mine and waited so long. To me it was worth the wait. Good luck shopping, maybe you can make a deal on the one of 6 spds that you find if the autos are the ones in demand.

Got It!!

Well, I went down last week and talked out the deal with the salesman, and then picked it up Saturday after work! Woohooo! It's an Electric Blue SXT/ Auto, with the Sirius radio. How did I live without satelite radio?!? Anyway, the sticker was $28,350 and I got it for 25,000 with the $500 gas card. I'm happy with the deal, and exstatic about the vehicle. Got a few tweeks I want to do, like fog lights, maybe some custom airbrushing.... If I see you in the Hammer, I'll wave...
