Hey guys,
Just ran into a new check engine light this morning...checked with my reader and its pulling a P1004 code. I checked the internet and found a few suggestions for a Dodge Charger which I will try this evening. Anyone run into this?
2007 Dodge Nitro R/T 4.0
Here is what I found on other forums(Charger forums, couldn't find anything for a Nitro):
Costly Analysis:

it is a short runner valve performance. they replaced the intake manifold plenum. cost $1200, but they repaired under warranty in the interest of customer satisfaction. my base warranty is out by milage, yet they repaired it for free. now that is a great dealership.
AND
For those who have encountered this nuisance Code, here is what you can expect when you take it in to the dealership.
- If your dealership has the upload "patch" for this, it will take about 30 mins for them to flash the computer. My 5 star dealer didn't have the patch last Saturday. Service Counter said it would take 6 hours to download into StarScan before they could upload it into my vehicle. If you are lucky enough to have a Dealer upload the "patch", chance are the check engine light will come back on when you get a mile or so away from the dealership.
- The next step is the replacement of the intake manifold. Part probably isn't in stock so they will need to order it (about a 2 day deal) and it takes about 3.5 hours to do, according to the Service Counter. Now I haven't gotten the new intake installed yet, but when I do, I hope it fixes the issue.
TSB 18-003-07 is the Technical Service Bulletin. Apparently, a lot of the 3.5L's are beginning to show problems with the intakes.
Just thought I'd pass the information on to everyone. And byt the way, my key dance shows a 1004....no P in front of it. (Ref 2007 SXT)
CHEAP FIX

...Take the short intake runner solenoid off. It`s the one on the drivers side of the plenum....
...You`ll see a notch in the solenoid and a tab inside the plenum when you remove it. Gently try to move the tab clockwise with you fingers or needle nose pliers. You`ll feel it is stuck. Go ahead and turn it anyway. It will free up. Then go get some Berrymans B12 or similar carburetor cleaner in a spray can and start spraying inside the plenum while turning the valve (tab) back and forth. You`ll notice that it starts moving more free after you work it a little bit.
Now put the solenoid back on and clear the code.
The reason it sticks is because of too much oil saturating the air intake plenum then forming "gunk", for lack of a better term. Want to know how to prevent this? Get a catch can for your car. It will save you time, money and aggravation in the future...
MORE ABOUT THE CODE:
This code p1004 is caused by the short runner valve as stated previously the rubber used in the valve deteriorates from the motor oil sucked into the intake and starts to "stick" you can clean it up with some intake cleaner and depending on how bad it is this may fix the problem for a short time or a long time. I have had this proplem starting around 50k miles the cleaning fix worked well for awhile but now at over 90k miles during the winter the check engine light stays on all the time very noticeable performance reduction and high fuel consumption as essentially the engine is not getting air when it needs it if you hit the gas and hear a noticable "sucking" sound that almost sounds like someone slurping a drink that is the valve sticking this will normally improve as the engine warms up and the valve loosens itself. The fix is definatly worth a try if it hasnt been going on for too long but at some point your just going to need a whole new intake around 60-90k miles even if you take the whole intake plenum off and clean it its still going to stick again within a short period of time. replacing just the electronic tuning valve itself might work but thats not the problem the real problem is the sealed valve running through the plastic intake.
