Painting chrome grill

Yes it can...but the key is in the surface prep. An adhesion promoter and a good primer (self etch or epoxy) should be the base. Then you can switch to standard 2K primers and paint for finishing. Short-cuts here will result in the paint peeling off!

Find a local 'jobber' that sells paint supplies to shops in the area. They can consult. Over the counter products are risky...but they can work IF they are applied perfectly.

Good luck....

Painting Chrome Grill

I have a Silver R/T that came with the chrome grill. After buying a billet grill set and installing them you could see the factory grill behind the billet grill so I had to take the bumper off and pull out the factory grill to paint it black. I just hand sanded the factory grill and used a platic material primer and basic flat black paint. Looks great I'll post pics soon.

In the interest of longevity I would powder coar it. You will have far less problems with chipping. There aren't too may plastic powder coaters around so you will pay a couple bucks more but the result should be worth it.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing but my body shop says that since the chrome grilles are a thin layer of plastic chrome painted on plastic and it will flake off over time no matter how well primed. The thin layer of plastic chrome is what peels not the new paint.

True?

I am having my grill painted as we speak. My body shop is adding a flex agent to the paint to help curb the chipping. He said it will still chip since the chrome surface is hard and not a soft bumper type plastic.

I have a black SXT so the grill will be black.

I'd like to see some pictures of that when you are finished with it, sounds pretty neat.
