I've had my nitro back to the dealer four times for the parking brake not holding and it still doesnt work, I can pull it up to the top as far as it will go and it wont hold. The last time I had it in they said there wasnt anything wrong with it so I said let take it up on the lot which has a hill and you make it hold, he couldnt get to hold going forward or backward, so the service guy said he would have to call Chrysler and talk to them. no reply from the dealer yet. I took it home this way when I bought it , so shame on me.:shakehead:

My Brake seems to have too much slack in the cable compared to other cars that I have driven. For now it does seem to hold when parked uphill on my steep driveway.

I have a 6 speed so the parking brake is more important to me. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it gets worse.

Let us know what the dealer finally does on this one.

My Parking Brake is definately defective.

When pulled all the way back, it will not hold on a 30 degree forward incline.

Oddly enough, it seems to hold a bit better uphill. This is contrary to the way it should work. At this point I would be afraid to use my Nitro to launch my boat. This is item 2 on the first visit to the dealer.

I went by the dealer this week and the service man said chrysler did'nt have a fix for the park brake problem, Sounds phoney to me, think ill try a differant dealer.
I wonder if a fix is as simple as putting one of those cable slack clamps on the brake cable.

I did that one one of my cars and it worked perfectly. These are available at all auto stores.

I had the same issue and it turned out to be the ratchet mechanism. They ordered it for me after they tried to replace the cable and all is well now. Just have them order the whole assembly. A 6 year old could pull mine all the way up and now it is great

Took the nitro to a different dealer, they ordered and then installed a new ratchet and lever assembly and the park brake works great now. I will take my car to this dealership from now on.

My Nitro is in the shop now for service, and one of the problems is the adjustment on the parking brake. You can pull it all the way up,and it won't hold.
Frank,

I took mine in for this and they had no problem adjusting it. If a dealer tells you they can't fix this, they are wrong.

From the factory, the lever had no resistance until its last 1" of travel. Now it begins to grab about halfway up. Works fine now.

I have the 6 speed manual & have quite a slope to my driveway & I've had mine in twice for the park brake. I can pull it all the way & it barely holds. After reading some of these posts I will take it back & ask for the replacement ratchet.

Mine seems very tight, can only be pulled about 6 clicks. It works very well.
I just checked & the lever only has 8 clicks. I would think the 3rd or 4th click is where it should hold from. Mine will only hold on the 8th click. I don't trust this at all. I've had my dealer look at mine 3 times now & they said it is "self adjusting & no adjustments are necessary, park brake working fine right now". Sounds like they are covering their asses if you ask me. If I don't leave my truck in gear I'm sure it will end up in the middle of the road. How does one get a remote starter installed if they have to keep the damn thing in gear when parked???

Switching dealerships can help!

Wow, the difference between dealerships can be pretty amazing.

The service dept at the dealership where I bought my Nitro sounded like they'd be good, but when I got the line: "Oh, that's normal for a Nitro", I knew it was time to look elsewhere. :loser1: They didn't even see my first service! This place was AutoNation, which had taken over another dealership I used to use. Service started slipping after they took over.

A nearby dealership had recently been acquired by a local outfit (becoming their 4th dealership) and I have nothing but good to say about them! Yes, I got the "That's normal for a Nitro" ... but he still set up a visit to take a look at the issues ... and he's working with me through this Torque Converter issue! Not willing to just let it go with the "status quo". (That would be Rairdon's ... and it's a Chrysler/Jeep dealership ... not yet Dodge!)

How to: Adjust emergency brake tension.

If it is not this issue. See below.

In the parking brake picture, it appears that there is a standar star-adjust wheel on the brake shoes.

Does this mean I can use my usual brake adjusting tool on this?
No need, Thanks to NitroTech's post http://www.nitroforumz.com/showpost.php?p=13960&postcount=8

I took a close look at the Pic. and noticed that the Nitro's emergency brake is self adjusting.

Mine was only holding on the last click as well, so I did a little testing and this is what I came up with and it worked like a charm!!!

1. Find a place with just enough of a slope, that when your rig is in neutral, it will roll backward. ( I used a parking lot with a drain in it.)
2. Point your car with the front facing up hill.
3. Apply your brake pedal. Place your transmission in neutral.
4. Grasp your emergency brake handle, depress and hold the release button.
5. Take your foot off the brake pedal and let the car roll backward down the hill. (You do not have to be rolling fast.)
6. As you are rolling backward pull the emergency brake handle up fast and hard, push it back down, and repeat. (You have to depress and hold the release button while you are doing this and the vehicle must continue to roll.)

I gained about 1 click on the emergency brake for every 2 pull & release sequences.

CAUTION!!! Do not do this to the point that your emergency brake engages prior to the 4th click. This could cause the brake pads to rub. Decreasing fuel mileage and life expectancy of the pad. Also, if the brake pads drag while driving, they can generate so much heat, that it could actually cause a fire.
DO THE ABOVE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
