Well, after what was supposed to be a 4 hour job (took about 7), I finally have the Avic-D3 installed through Tweeter. Guy is about as anal as I am when it comes to clutter, so he worked the XM and XMNav antennas so close to the top rails as to be hardly noticable. He said he put his in the dash, but that he loses reception a bit more than on the roof, and so does not want that to be an issue for me.

This was his first NITRO, so he was a bit shell-shocked. I guess DCX is changing quite a bit these days. He has been doing this for 13 years, and certainly took his time to make sure everything was done well. I got real lucky with the labor charges (thank God!), as he underestimated the power of the Nitro! :Racing:

Also, told me how he plans on putting the microphone for my bt up near the rearview mirror. We are still waiting for that part. He had a brushed aluminum kit, and I like it better than black...."de gustibus" as they say. At this point, there is no Nitro-specific Canbus (?) by Pac, so I have no steering wheel controls. When that becomes available, will get it.

I really like the D3. Just an FYI, though - the full song/artist does not appear or scroll for XM. Must be a limitation of the computer.

All in all very happy, especially with the sound. :ura1:

Jaerho,

No pics yet, will try to get that done soon.

What kind of information would you like? Most anything technical (which I have no clue about!) is on the Pioneer Website. Other than that, more than happy to share!

The no full name and no scroll, I think that is just a limitation with Pioneer head units. I have a DEH-P9800BT in our Nitro and a DEH-P5900IB in my Ram, neither of which show the full name, and don't scroll. And you would think with the size of the screen on the Avic-D3, there woudl be enough room to show all the infromation, like the SkyFi2 does.

Congrats Chitown! I have the Avic-D3 installed as well! My installer was done with mine in 2.5 hours... I'm very satisfied with it as well. As nice as it was this weekend, I forgot to take pics of my D3, but I will get some pics up soon. ;)

2.5 hours? WOW! I am a bit concerned with the install right now since the terrestrial radio stations' reception is very poor. I cannot imagine why. I need to call the installer. I usually cringe with BB and Tweeter-type installations, but this guy seems really conscientious. I am hoping the bluetooth module comes in soon - one thing I really need in Chicago (we have a cell phone driver law here).

Anything that you found odd/or really cool about AVIC-D3? I really like the IPod interface (positive), and as I mentioned before in an earlier post, I am slightly annoyed with the truncated information when in XM mode (negative). I lost the steering wheel functionality, but just biding my time, not really a major loss with as good a sound as the Pioneer is supplying the speakers!

I had it installed on Friday, so I haven't had a lot of "air time" with it. I got myself an IPod mainly to use at the gym (yet to get there!), but any of the music I want will either be via XM or the IPod, so not too worried about CD issues.

I can honestly say, I have no complaints about the D3. There is no need for me to change the Nav disc either, I use my 80gb ipod, and the XM nav traffic is very good to have. I have the bypass done on mine, so when it comes down to changing the Nav disc out for a dvd disc, it won't bother me to change it, some people just nit pick about everything little thing. The D3 has a memory mode function, so it's not going to be a problem for me swapping discs. For the money, the D3 has satisfied my needs. :Racing:

The antenna fits VERY nice under the defrost vents, in a little space that I imagine is meant for the OEM antenna. When you take out the little tray above the heater/AC vents in the middle, there is a pre drilled hole to feed the wire through, as well a perfect spot to add double sided tape and set the antenna perfectly in place. Once you replace the tray and defrost covers, you see nothing.

BTW, I am selling my AVIC-D2, as I have upgraded to the AVIC-D3 for better iPod control and updated NAV maps. If you are interested in my D2 it is on ebay: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1...item=150116630164&ssPageName=ADME:B:BOWO:US:1

sounds like a good place. My installer and I talked a bit, and he (we) decided to put the antennae up on the roof near the black siderails (?). They are pretty unobtrusive that way, and when looking head-on, seem to offer a symmetry to the two washer fluid outlets on the hood.

I had to laugh.. that is the same place I fished my GPS antenna wire through :) I thought it was a secret spot ... hehe.

well, here is a bit of an update....I am in the process of getting the install quasi-redone. I have been getting the runaround re the bluetooth for the Avic D3, so I went to a local shop, and after "only" 8 calls, he was able to find me one. They also checked the install, and asked if I wanted the antennae on the roof (implied the "really" in that question!). They said it is no problem for reception, etc. to put it inside the dash. Also, realized that the FM is way bad and there is no AM with the no install. Guys at the local place told me why and will take care of that as well. Finally, they are going to get a PAC system so that I can use my steering wheel controls. I told them that I am not sure if that is possible, but they already were calling their contacts. Why I ever went to the other place is beyond me, but they were sincere and tried their best with what they had, I believe. Just nice to get things the way I would like them.

Lilsalmon, you ever get the steering wheel controls to work?
