Hey there, new to the forum.

I purchased my 2007 Dodge Nitro R/T (with standard 20 in. chrome-clad wheels) about 2 months ago and I'm experiencing a "clicking" noise coming from the right rear wheel at low speed.

When I took it to the dealer one of the service advisors told me that I was not the first one to come to them with the same problem.

And according to my service advisor at the dealer, Daimler Chrysler is aware of the problem and working on a fix. He also mentioned he "heard" that they are discontinuing the current 20 in. rim and making something new/different.

So has anyone else had the same problem? If so what did you do?
Can anyone confirm/disprove what I was told by my service advisor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Chrysler is working on a TSB to cover the chrome clad wheel noise, they just have not released it yet. This is what your service department is talking about. Without the TSB, all they can do is replace the wheel with the noise. The problem stems from the plastic cladding being loose some how on the wheel producing the noise. It shouldn't be dangerous, unless it comes off and hits a pedestrian. But that is doubtful.

Wheel Recall???

I wonder if Chrysler will recall all the plastic clad wheels on the R/T's?

It has been a long while since I have had chrome wheels. Can anyone tell me if they think it is easier or more work to care for a REAL CHROME wheel than it is to clean and polish the plastic clad chrome wheels on the R/T's? It seems to me to take a lot of work to keep my R/T wheels looking bright and shiny.

Maybe I am just getting old and running out of "elbow grease".:i_rolleyes:

I wonder if that will actually fix the problem. You all know how hard it is to clean old brake dust off things. You HAVE to get the area where you apply the silicone super clean otherwise it'll just fall off after a short time.

I can tell you after taking my Nitro R/T in to get the chrome clad problem fixed that it is still making the same noise.

The service advisor told me that I was the first Nirto that they worked on for this problem.

The dealer will be getting a call the next day to hear that their "fix" did not work.

Maybe I should just get custom rims or something so I don't have to deal with this anymore.

I took my Nitro in today for its 3 month service and my service advisor called me back this afternoon to ask if he can keep it overnight so that the district rep can take a look at the chrome clad wheel problem.
For now I'm crusing around in a Dodge Caliber...:wiggle2:

I'll post here when I get my Nitro back with what they found out...

CRC Brake cleaner is some wonderful stuff. Not only will it take that brake dust off but will leave it high and dry in a matter of minutes. It seems like a pretty cheesey rapir though but in my 54 years I've seen some real doosies. GM had a TSB on their wire hub caps back in the 80's rattling. I worked for an Olds dealer and the repair was to wrap the outer ring of the cap four times with electrical tape and reinstall the cap. We had more recalls during the eighties than I've seen combined in all the years since. The thing I would worry about in this repair is keeping the tire balanced. I'm sure a few tubes of silicone (RTV) does wonders for the tire balance. I hate those plastic covered wheels. JW

Update...

Well it's been weeks after the "fix" from the dealer for the chrome clad wheel problem. All I can say it helped, but did not stop the problem entirely. I still can hear the clicking sound with the windows down at low speeds. It varies when I hear the sound or not.

Now I think I have a A/C problem with the Nitro… I will have to check that thread now…

Ive never heard that on mine, then again I have less than 10,000 miles on it and have an exhaust. So chances are I wouldn't even hear it if it was making the noise!
