Has anyone had any issues with the rear diff on their Nitro? On Saturday my wife had just started to accelerate at a green light when she heard a "bang" and everything shut off. I drove over to help her and found that chunks of the rear diff and the gear lube laying under the Nitro.

Since the gears were broken, a $150 tow later we got it to the dealer where they are currently repairing it. The service writer was a little evasive when I asked him if he had seen anything like this before but finally said this was not the first Nitro that has had this same issue.

We have had the computer replaced twice already as it was randomly shutting the engine off while driving down the road.

You need to confirm if the G25 reprogramming recall has been done to your vehicle for the stalling.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

We welcome you to this forum and are here to help. I have not yet heard of Rear dif problems.

As for the shutting off thing, there is a TSB out there about a reprogram to the ECM. I have a feeling the dealer did not have to replace the ECM.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. :) The dealer is still trying to track down the replacement parts so it appears they will have it for a while longer.

My wife is ready to trade it in on something else just because I travel quite a bit and she has lost faith in this being a reliable vehicle. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if the diff had let loose on the freeway at 70mph. Hopefully this will be the last problem we have as I really like this better than the other similar vehicles we have owned.

I have not seen a Nitro's rear differential blown up yet. Sorry about that.

For the stalling, replacing the computer doesn't correct the problem. The problem was found to be with the software programming of the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). This is also the fuse box under the hood.

That $150 should be re-imbursed to you. I would demand it!

Sorry about the issues and welcome.

Do the 3.7's and 4.0's use the same rear diff?

Differential Problem!

:eek:My R/T with 323 mi. had complete rear end gears replaced because I took in complaining of a "ticking sound at low speed (5mi. per hr. or slower) comming from rear end.
The mechanics notes read 'Ring & Pinion not properly machined at factory'
replaced all components.
I hope this is not a major problem for this new model car.

I need to know before I head to the dealer which one it is?? ECM or TIPM???

I hate hearing ANY bad news about the nitro. I just hit 15K yesterday and after my oil change, I was driving home (I had put about 120 miles of driving the entire day), all of a sudden, the panel lights went on for a brief second, then nothing. I was driving at the time but didn't lose any steering or control, but when I shouted, " What the HELL???", I woke my wife up!!!

I'd heard about all the stalling issues with the SXT and SLT but not so much on the RT, so I was kinda baffled. Again, to reiterate, the car did NOT stall, but that was the very first time something weird like that happened!! Am I experiencing the quiet before the storm????
