I'm not sure if this question belongs here but I doesn't fit anywhere else ... so ...

I'm trying to spec out what I want and when doing it on the Dodge site and specing an SXT with manual tranny, the 3.73 gears are listed as available as an option. But in all the literature they are only available with the auto tranny.

Can any one confirm the availability of the 3.73 rear gear with the manual tranny in an SXT?

TIA, Stewart

That is the information available in the printed literature. My hope is that the website is more indicative of the actual ordering process at the dealer.

It appears that if you order the SXT with the standard (no pun) manual tranny you can choose the 3.73's as an option. And if you chose the 17" wheels the auto tranny no longer is an option but the 3.73's can still be ordered.

Maybe it's just the programmer. But maybe it's possible to get 3.73's if you want them without the auto tranny. :pepper: :pepper: :pepper:

I just ordered my 6sPD SXT and the only gear was the 3.21.

But don't fret the first gear is quite low on the manual tranny. Don't forget, the auto is a 4sp overdrive and it needs the lower rear ratio because you have fewer gears.

If they ever have aftermarket Gears I would be interested, but I would like to go all the way to 4:11.

The 3.73's would suit me fine. With 29"+ tall tires it would be like having 3.30 or so gears with 26" tall tires. which is not too bad. I've got 3.42's in my '96 Impala SS with 285/40-17 tires and it runs great. With the 4.11's you would never need 1st gear at all (probably couldn't shift out of it fast enough) and 2nd would be used most of the time to start.

I don't need speed and power. Got that all ready in other vehicles. But the rolling hills around here are probably better navigated with the 3.73's. So I'll continue to hope.

Interesting cooincidence, I have a 94 9C1 Caprice that I have modified, still have, love and will never sell. I used to spend time on the NAISSO site but it has been a long time. I always planned to do 3:73 gears but never got around to it.

How about the first one to find Nitro gears yells? I wonder if the a ring & pinion for the Liberty would work?

As for a super low first gear, OK with me, I'll take off in 2nd and still have 4 more to go.

I used to have a 1 Ton GMC with a 3speed + low tranny and this is kind of what I envision with 4:11's on the Nitro. This would help compensate for the lack of a low range in 4WD mode. Not quite a rock climber, but at least a stump puller.

I still spend a lot of time on the ImpalaSSForum. I've had my '96 SS since new and won't give it up. I'm just putting on a set of Dan's Tubulars and have to wait for my new MIG welder to deal with a broken bolt in the head.

The Nitro rear axle is a corporate 8.25". What's the Liberty got?

Mine will do nothing more off-road than a lake road or possibly a back wood detour road so I'm not really concerned about the stump pulling power. Can do that with my little Fordson Super Dexta tractor. :D But I would like a little more immediate dig. Having a 9C1 you will appreciate that.

I was just on the Dodge Canada site (http://www.dodge.ca/en/nitro/index.html ) and was able to build and price an SXT, 6-spd, with 17" wheels and 3.73's. I've got to talk to a dealer about this. Only in Canada, you say???!!

You really have to develpop a relationship with a dealer to find out what is an orderable option. Not an easy thing. I am finding that regardless of brand of car, salespeople are not nearly as knowledgeable as they were 20 years ago. I guess the business has changed to more of a commodity.

For example Edmunds says I can order the SXT apearance package, but it the factory stopped offering it.

Part of the gear thing is that each combo of gear and engine must be tested for the EPA Gestapo to pass. Maybe Canada is different.

I guess if all else fails we can buy the 3.73 gears from the parts dept some day.

BTW you may have just motivated me to go back on the NAISSO site again.

Like most jobs now-a-days it isn't knowledge and the ability to think that works, it's the ability to do what a computer tell you. If something isn't on the screen then it doesn't exist, period.

The Dodge Canada website show the SXT painted fenders package as available. It also shows a package for the SLT to give you black fenders but it's more expensive than the SXT version!

Canada has similar emissions and safety standards to the US so I understand the certification aspect. Maybe it's a matter of working with the dealer. When I got my SS it had only 3.08's available. Even the dealer (an old hot-rodder) said it needed more rear gear and about 6 months later the dealership installed the 3.42's and asked no questions or made any comments. That's what it is about. Even did the job at just above cost.

Have you ever checked out the Forum. It's down right now for a server transfer. Good place if you have a B-Body.
