My 2007 SLT will intermittently (but for the most part) make a prominent but quick higher pitched scraping noise immediately prior to shifting up at cruising speed gears followed by a small to violent shutter throughout the vehicle. I had it in the dealership already but they couldn't replicate the issue on their road test and the scanners weren't reading any error codes.
The day after receiving my Nitro back I had it on the highway and it started very violently shuttering during shifts then went into limp mode refusing to shift up or down out of the gear it was in. The very next day I went back had their mechanic come for a ride with me up the highway and after a few minutes of highway speeds I could get it to make the noise reliably at higher speed gear shifts with a bit of a shutter with it.
The dealership took my Nitro back and put about another 5 hours into road testing and able to get the noise and shutter now but the only way they say they can get to the bottom of this is to get it to go into limp mode and scan it during that.

Have any of you ever experienced this before? The transmission specialist at the Dodge dealership that rode with me said he'd never heard anything like that before in his 25 year career.

Limp mode will set and store a DTC. They should have been able to find that...
I have not heard of this particular problem here on the forum.
If I were to wager a guess, it would be a problem with the shift solenoid pack. One valve stuck open when trying to open another one to change gears. TOTAL GUESS!!!
Please do keep us posted as things happen, and what they find.

The odd thing was that there was no record of limp mode stored in the computer. After picking the nitro up today I took it for a drive out of town and back. Noise and bad shifts the entire time, just before I got back in town it went back into limp (again no check engine light) and I went straight back to the shop to have it tested under those conditions. It was only then that the scanner picked up any hint of an issue but nothing conclusive yet on what it could be. The mechanics best guess was shift solenoid too, he's starting with that.

Do you happen to know the code?

Glad they were finally able to get something to start with.
It could be a slew of things. There are several DTC which include intermittent and the solenoid pack.
Keep us posted. Now I'm really curious.

The scanner also also told the mechanic to test the clutch on gear 4 but he told me he can only do that up to gear 3.
