I need to know the difference between tow/haul and O/D. I thought my nitro was stuck in tow/haul. But the service manager at the dealership said the only thing tow/haul does is shift it in and out of O/D. There is no difference in my truck between tow/haul and normal mode in the lower gears it shifts exactly the same. My husband's truck has tow/haul and it makes it shift later in the lower gears. My truck shifts very late now (14mph) on slow acceleration in normal and tow/haul. And it hesitates at 40 mph and then shifts strange after that till about 60 or so. Sometimes it won't shift down when I slow down, and then when I accelerate again it won't go. I would appreciate any helpful comments. Thanks.

I have never seen this documented, but my impression is that the Tow/Haul button just disables the Overdrive. My Nitro does shift a bit later than when it's unloaded, but this is pretty typical in any auto trans.
The engine's exhaust is also a bit louder when pulling a trailer.

Re:shifting problems:tow/haul mode?

thanks for the reply. I have never pulled anything with my Nitro. But my husband does alot of towing with his truck. He's convinced that my truck is stuck in Tow/haul mode because it acts just like his when it's in tow/haul with or without TOWING anything. Someone else told me that Tow/haul keeps the tranny in lower gears longer and allows 4th gear O/D while locking out 5th. O/D locks out both 4th and 5th gear O/D. Which makes sense. This only started after my truck stalled out on me at 5400 miles and the dealership said the
torque converter had to be replaced plus the tsbs and recall work. Up till then it was great, no problems. NOW UGH!!!

re:tow/haul

ok...one more question...if the Tow/haul button only controls O/D, then why isn't it called the O/D button, instead of "Tow/Haul"? Sorry, but this is really buggin' the crap out me. LOL On my Durango it was called the O/D button.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but how else will I learn?

Good question, Nitr010507. I'd say marketing is the reason. Does any other mid size SUV have a 5000 lb tow rating? And can you think of any other ways to drive that fact home?

Heres another stupid question........ were you assimilated or something? How did you end up with a name like Nitr010507? Big Brother? ;)
