Ok, I have almost 200 miles on my nitro and I know that that is not much, but I am only getting 14 mpg. Given I am a teenager, I'm not one to floor the pedal everywhere I go b/c I do try to remain conscious of the gas. I'm not sure if it is because the car is still new or what, but my mom's escalade gets better gas mileage with its 350hp V8.

Hey guy, if you have been reading the other posts on fuel economy, then you should know that many have said that mileage improves over time. However, if you haven't driven for any long distances, that will seriously undermine fuel economy. Being in school, I can see how you wouldn't have the opportunity or need to travel any distance of length. Until you are out for summer break and have a chance to go somewhere, it will most likely stay kind of low. Hopefully, it will improve to around 16 mpg. Also, don't rely on the EVIC to calculate fuel economy. Build yourself a spreadsheet in EXCEL and track it over time for yourself based on fill-ups and distance traveled. This will give you accurate mpg numbers. You will have to travel continuously at highway speeds for 20 - 30 minutes to significantly raise your mpg on your EVIC computer. You would have to do this daily to permanently change your numbers.

oooo ok. Thanks a lot! I guess I just have to try to see how long I can go before filling up. I got my nitro on tuesday and it is now sunday night. I still have well over half a tank left. If I can go about 2 weeks on 1 tank, ill be pretty happy. The only serious driving I do is on the weekends, which is still not very far. On weekdays, I usually just go to school and back...about 5 miles round trip.

Things definitely improve with a couple thousand miles, especially at freeway speeds.
We went camping & pulled the ATVs about 140 miles over 4th of July pass (1000' climb in less than 10 miles) & still managed 14.5 mpg. Without the trailer, I probably could have gotten about 20 mpg.

An update on my MPG. Took a road trip today. Some 35 mph, more 70 mph, some 55 mph, and about half the trip with AC. Average of 25.1 MPG!!!!!!!!!!!! We have almost 9000 miles now too. This was over a 5 hr and 22 min drive time. I don't think that is too bad.

Maybe Ferris Bueller borrowed your ride for the day and took a road trip!:Na_Na_Na_Na:
Haha maybe. Well today, I checked and i was down to 16.4 mpg. I want to get it back to around 18. The good news is, is that I have been driving my car for 1 week now, and I still have nearly half a tank left. So taking a rough estimate, that would be about $15 a week worth of gas. Not too bad. About $2 a day.

SLT 3.7L vs R/T 4.0L mileage

My wife's SLT usually averages around 17.6mpg with her behind the wheel. I bought my R/T about 6 weeks later and I am averaging between 20.5mpg and 21.2mpg driving around town (8 miles to and from work) and up and down the mountain which takes me up over 8,000 ft above sea level, and down to about 700 ft above sea level, 3 to 4 times a month. I was concerned about gas mileage before I bought my R/T, but am very happy with what I am getting, considering that both vehicles are 4x4's and my R/T's performance is quite snappy (feels like a sports car compared to my previous ride, Toyota Sequoia Limited). When I take the wheel of the SLT, I am able to almost match the mileage of my R/T, so it is a matter of driving style and the advantage of the extra gear the R/T automatic has. I am sure I could improve mileage even further if I had a manual transmission. So, my advice is to modify your driving style if you want your mileage to be over 20mpg. The Nitro is a heavy truck, not a Honda CRV. Enjoy the difference!

Wow that is very good. My goal is to get my SLT up to 18.

Getting 15 now almost 2k on it, been a little too heavy on the foot lately :Racing:
Hey dk1677, is your SXT an automatic, or manual trasmission? Before I test drove my R/T, I was going to get a Sunburst Orange SXT with the 6-speed. I like the look of that model, but think my R/T in Sunburst Orange turns a lot of heads. I have had several people come up to talk to me about this car and that has never happened to me before for any other car I have owned.

Keep driving

I now have almost 6000km or 3750 miles on the vehicle.
I am thinking the vehicle shifts to over drive at too low a speed during city driving.
Feels like engine lugs.I tried an experiment leaving it in "TOW haul" during city driving until I can get up to 35-40 miles per hour.
I went from 14 to 16 mpg.

on other subject.
Love my load and go.
Carry large plastic container when doing the big COSTCO run.
Just pull it out and load it up and push it back.

Better Mileage

The 5-speed in the R/T is much better and with any automatic, it is better to disable the overdrive gear while driving in city, or low speed situations. I attribute part of my good mileage to down shifting on uphill grades when at slower speeds to prevent lugging and waiting for the transmission to decide that it needs to shift to a lower gear.

I try to get my wife to keep her SLT in Tow/Haul mode most of the time when she is driving in our little resort town.
