I was wondering if anyone has the measurements for the box. I would like to make a box somewhat similar to that so I can install a 10" or 12" sub in that area. If anyone as the dimensions of it I would greatly appreciate if you can tell me. Oh yea as well as the distance between the the plastic cover and the front of the sub would be good to know as well. I normally buy high excursion subs so I am curious as to how close that plastic cover piece is to the sub.

I have mine sitting on the floor. It is roughly 14" tall, 20" at the widest part and 7" deep to the outside of the woofer. You won't be able to get a 12" sub in there, you will need more area. A 10" would work. I just had a custom box built for mine, check out my photo gallery. Hope this info helps you!

Wow you are brave to fiberglass in your car!! I was actually thinking of the same idea of doing a rear fiberglass section of the box to fit in that space. Also wanted to know how do you like your head unit? I was personally thinking about the cda-9887 but after I saw I had to pay another $250 just to adjust the bass and treble I got a little irritated. Good job on the whole install, looks really clean!!

I LOVE the head unit!!! Had read reviews that it is slow accessing things on the head unit but no way! I can scroll through the artist list just like I was holding the iPod itself! It sounds good and is very user friendly!

I really trusted the guy who did my install. He promised me he would make the sub box look like it came from the factory and it really does!!! I am very happy with the way it all turned out!!!

Holy crap that sub box looks awesome. That guy wouldn't be interested in making a few more? When I had a Mazda a guy around here made 1 for someone, and saved the mold, and lucky he did because lots more wanted one. He did a group buy and it did pretty well... That one would probably too.. Just an idea.. Not sure of anyone around here (where im from) that could do that, I sure couldn't!! Anyways looks awesome. However you say that a 10" sub would fit in the stock box if I got my hands on it?

Hubby the sometime stereo installer said no bigger than a 10" in the stock box. The guy who made mine cut the plastic quarter panel then fiberglassed the back as a mold. Pulled that out when it was cured and built the rest. He did an amazing job, I am glad that I took pictures everyday to see it all unfold!

He molded the fiberglass along the quarter panel and pulled it out. Unfortunately I wasn't there when they did that so I couldn't get pictures. I don't see how you could make a box without cutting the plastic. You need some room for the box and speaker and still be able to keep it somewhat flush so you can still use the back end.

I should have explained a bit better.

When you do an install like this there are three options,
1. Cut away some of the plastics to allow for a deeper install and utilize some of the existing plastic as part of the box.
2. Remove the plastic completely and make a whole new panel that replaces the original and incorporates the sub.
3. Build a totally separate enclosure and attach it to the base of the floor or have it freestanding

The first one requires the least amount of fab for a custom install. The second requires the most and would require the technician to have a lot of patience and ability to create something that is better than the original panels.
The last one is the easiest but almost always results in loss of some space in the cargo area / trunk.

The only way I found to create a new custom box that was repeatable was the second option and to be honest, I just don't have the patience to do it any more.

For those of us with the factory sub there is one more option. Remove the inner "speaker box" from the side panel and use foam to create a mold of the cavity and create a new box with more volume so that a larger speaker can be utilized. The increased size (volume) will also help prevent another problem that we all have with big bass. Vibrations. The custom inner box is installed with a foam tape to support the outer panels therefore keeping some pressure on it and preventing it from vibrating. It may be a bit of a balancing act to not use too much pressure on it that would allow the outer panel to crack but with big bass there is always something breaking so ................... :)

I hope that is a bit clearer.

Still no plate BJ?

I think you need some more convicts in your state. :)
