So this morning I got in the Nitro & started it like I do every morning..... turn the key, hold it for a second or two & let go. The thing is so reliable, it starts every single time so I don't ever think about it. This time, I let the key go & the starter continued to spin for about 4 or 5 seconds. The engine started & the starter stopped spinning as if I'd just let the key go. Of course this is how the TIPM is supposed to work but it sort of caught me off guard at the time.

I think I saw this happen one time before. But letting go of the key & having the starter still spinning.... sort of blew me away so I turned it off just as the engine started. Then I restarted it with no issue.

Kind of a weird feature to get used to.

I have only had the Nitro stall once in 8500 miles & while I've recieved the recall notice, I haven't made it into the dealer for the ECM reprogram yet.

The same thing has happened to me 2 or 3 times aready and I don't have 1100 miles on it yet. So what is this TIPM and what does it do? As a mechanic this doesn't seem normal to me. I let go of the key and it's supposed to stop cranking.

As I understand it, a major portion of the Nitro is a type of "fly by wire" system (my rough interpretation). This includes but isn't limited to the throttle, horn & key switch. So when you push or pull or turn any of these switches, it sends a signal to the ECM which actually triggers the function.
So it makes it harder for the operator to turn the key & let it go before the engine starts, or push the horn for a short beep, etc. The actual function is controlled by the ECM, which actuates as it sees fit.

Maybe one of the Chrysler techs can give us more details on this. And what other functions are fly by wire.

Hi! Fellow Nitro owner, I had a very bad experience yesterday with my unit. I purchased my Nitro SLT 4X4 1st week of November 2007.

1st problem I encountered last May 2007 as per service department findings, was the factory installed a defective motor for the power window driver side, I wait five days to have it fixed cause they ordered the parts.

2nd, this happen yesterday, when i was driving on my way to work, suddenly all the lights in the dashboard were flashing, thermometer and gas guage malfunction, A/C shut off and after a few miles the engine just totally shut off. So my car was towed and brought to the dealer. And when I arrived home, I took my mails and what I've found was the Safety Recall Notice about the TIPM. Wow!!!! the harm was done.

So here's a friendly advise bring your unit ASAP to your dealer and have it fixed before it happens to all Nitro owners. To this date I got 7829 miles on it and I encountered this serious problem and really very scary.

Not sure what the tipm actually is but the deal with the ignition self-starting is normal. Most of the newer DCX vehicles do this. GM has been doing this for many years. You should be able to turn over the ignition key while it's already running and it won't grind the starter too. Who ever stated that the ECM does everything is partially right. There are many different computers on this car and they all do all kinds of things. You might hit a switch or what ever but that just goes to its computer then the computer sends a signal to a relay or what have you. It's all in what manufactures think they have to do for us "dumb" consumers.
