All,

All the sources I have checked (Edmunds, Cars.com, etc) say all '07 Nitros with automatic transmissions come standard with a transmission cooler (I believe Edmunds calls it an "auxilliary transmission cooler"), but in the towing section of the manual, they suggest that this only comes on Nitros equipped with the towing package. The max trailer weight appears to be 3500lbs with the cooler and 2000lbs without.. Is it safe to assume all Nitros with an automatic transmission can tow 3500lbs?

If not, I would like to hear from people who have attempted to tow over 2000lbs without the towing package (put on your own hitch).. I need to tow a popup camper at around 2500lbs 4 or 5 times per year and would like to know in advance if my transmission will overheat.

Thanks,
Dan

Welcome aboard Dan.. The knowledge I have regarding towing and the Nitro is limited to my R/T 08,AT and the towing I have done to date. I have the tow package and it includes the tranny cooler ,full size spare and the tow hitch. This package raises the tow ability of the Nitro to 5000 pounds. I have pulled about 3500-4000 pounds @ 70-80 mph without any effort or strain on my Nitro. My trailer is NOT equipped with brakes but stopping was no problem.I have only towed here in /Florida and it is flatter than a two day old pancake.

First consideration, trailering before your Nitro is broken in is a no no . Depending where you tow and for how long a period is as important as having a tranny cooler .A cooler may be added, also a load spreading hitch is advised .Speaking for myself ,before I venture into any mountain trips I WILL add brakes on my trailer .Maybe checking into a tow package from your dealer may be a good idea if you plan any long or hilly trips.
