Now that I have my new roof rails, I was confident enough to put on my sport bars and ski carrier.

Everything is well made, rattle free and fits well.

I don't however understand the value of the locks on the end cap of each sport bar. These caps don't hide any mounting hardware, nor do they protect against removal of the ski rack (it has it's own lock )

The allen screw for the rail clamp is exposed and the two screws on the top that hold on the bar to the clamp are also exposed. it would seem that all you need is an allen wrench to remove each bar.

I am I missing something here? I see no value for these locks.

Thread resurrection

Just installed a new set on my 08 RT today and noticed the same thing.

What the hell is the point of the locking end caps if you can take the bars off with the tightening hex bolt --- yeeesh.

I don't know about the locks, but those aren't regular allen head bolts. They have a special tool that removes them. There is a small pin in the center of the hex that prevents a regular hex wrench from loosening the bolt.

I have the same bars as well. I would believe that those locks are used for locking down the mopar accesories made for those bars. That groove on top under the rubber strip probably removes when you slide on an accessory. Which when slid on through the groove locks on the ends to keep from being stolen. Just a guess of course. Never used them yet, just got them to ruin my gas mileage :loser1:

Thanx Jeffrey.

Duuuhhh........... yup thats exactly what they are for. I have a Thule clamp on cargo box so I don't need the accessory channels and....well........

obviously I'm obtuse :loser1:

That special hex key is pretty cheesy for security though :i_rolleyes:
