Warning when putting air in your tire. My wife was putting air in to the front left tire today and the valve stem broke off with hardly any pressure applied. The warranty does not cover this. The guy at the tire shop estimated the stem at $150 and he has to order the part. All do to the sensor for the tire pressure monitoring system.

I can not believe that the stems are that fragile.

They are not that fragile. They also only cost $29.95 (+tax) for a single wheel sensor. If the dealership wants to charge you $150 then just buy the new sensor and take it to a tire shop and get them to replace it. They should do it for about 20 bucks and throw in a spin balance.:D

I see these everyday, but never seen one break. I won't say they are fragile at all. Anyways, I looked up the part number, 56053036AA, and list price is $42.80 CDN.

However, and I looked it up under my VIN, the Tire Pressure Sensors, under the Canadian Warranty 3year 60,000km is covered. Not sure why you are being told its not covered. :shakehead:

In my first test drive in a r/t, the stem fell inside the rim as I was driving. I got maybe .5mile from the dealership when it did this. My wife could hear the sound of air coming out as we drove down the road since it was the right front tire. It appeared that the stem looked fine but the nut that holds it in place was missing.

Thank you all for your replies.

Good to know the prices of the sensor. Basically as my wife has explained it to me. She had noticed that the left front tire was getting low so she just went to put air into the tire at a gas station. When she went to put the air hose on, the stem broke off inside the hose nozzle. As far as warranty they said because it was her who had been putting air into the tire it is not covered.

I told her if it happened again (DO NOT CALL THE DEALER) just take it down and say I got a flat and noticed this. That way warranty will cover it.

Other than that I still love my Nitro. Well my wifes Nitro I just pay for it. LOL

Wow, that's horrible customer service you have there. I mean, if you read the owner's manual it says to periodically check the tires and inflate/deflate them as needed. It NEVER states that this is a dealer only procedure.

Valve stems are made of aluminum and the valve caps (OEM and aftermarket) will corrode the stems after 2 or 3 years. If you then try to remove the cap, it will break off the stem and render the sensor inoperable (indicator will blink rapidly for that wheel and no way to reset it.) If it happens to one stem, you can bet the other 3 are at risk. I opted to replace the stem with an $11 dollar valve stem.

I just went through this with my '08 Nitro.

This is a fault in design by Chrysler.

Consumer remedy: exercise caps on stems every month or so while you own a Dodge.

Another alternative ...Next time you check the tire pressure add a little vasoline to the valve stem threads before replacing the cap..

Good idea, or you could just buy a set of plastic stem covers. This is a must when in a corrosive environment....Low cost.... Works well!
Just running this up the ol flag pole.... but I'm wondering if a person creates or assumes a liability when the modify a safety device when it's mandated by the Feds and installed by the Mfg.??
Do we have any free council from an attorney among us ?

More common then one would think.
You will have to buy a new TPM sensor and have it installed.
Contact your dealer. Some here have successfully had them replaced under warranty.

Mate exactly the same thing happened to me last weekend!!

I got a temp plastic one fitted from the local tyre shop.

However they said if I want the computer to work in the vehicle, I would need to get the sensor from Dodge and they will programe it all in.

So I called Dodge and as the vehicle was still under warranty they replaced the whole stem/ sensor. I had to give the broken valve and the sensor back to the dealer otherwise they would have not covered it under warranty.

They would have charged me £85 if the vehicle was not under warranty. Good luck!
