A big shout out from Silver Transformer to all the Nitro Pros out there! :git:

I have owned this silver R/T Nitro since last september. I have 8400 miles currently and I average 15 to 18 miles per gallon (and NO better than that ever) in combined highway and city driving. I am looking for 3 different ways I can improve gas milage on this vehicle to acquire a minimum of averaging 20 miles per gallon in combined City and Highway driving. Please share your knowledge! Thanks in advance!!

Welcome Silver Transformer ! Glad you joined us! I would recommend a new intake like K&N or AME or a drop in and a free flow exhaust like magnaflow or Flowmaster catback and a light foot on the gas will help too. Enjoy the form! :wavey:

Thank you dk1677! This site looks great and I still need to explore more. I will check into the Magnaflow and Flowmaster.

Any performance chip you might recommend as well?

Quite a few members have the Jet stage 1 or 2 chips fitted. You have the option of a drop in filter or cold air intake instead from a few manufacturers. As mentioned Maganaflow, flowmaster make catbacks as well as mufflers as well as a couple of other companies. Don't expect great mpg numbers from the Nitro. It is a heavy truck and is not known not its fuel economy...

1. Keep your tires within a few pounds of maximum suggested pressure
2. Cold Air Intake (I prefer K&N)
3. Cat back (I prefer MagnaFlow)
4. A chip (Jet Stage 1)

Note: None of these will help you unless you take it easy. If you like the sound and keep pounding the throttle your milage will decrease.

Every thing said here is good advice. One obvious one is turn off the AC if you don't need it. This makes a huge difference in city milage.

Also note that usually the AC compressor is on in the defog mode as well.

LA often has some nice, dry weather, open up the sunroof and enjoy.

BTW the added wind resistance of open windows is not significant below 60MPH or so.

Cant argue with that. Other than trying out my ac to see how chilly it makes the cab, I havent had it on at all. Put the four windows down and there is a lot of air coming in. Cools me down plenty.

I have the K&N cai. It works great. My Magnaflow is on the way, and I am planning on getting the stage two chip. It will be a while before I have it all in and installed, but if you are around, I will be making a chart with the differences in mpg and power as I feel it. Perhaps I will even find a dyno somewhere.

I have the Jet stage 2 along with headers, CAI, and a Flowmaster 50.

My mileage has improved but I don't really track it.

Keep in mind that you need to run midgrade or premium with the Jet stage 2.

Thanks for the response. Hard reality. Is it possible at all to rig this Nitro R/T to average 20MPG combined hwy and street driving? :Racing:

Thank you for the detailed choices! And I do want to step on the peddal without thinking about. I guess I can ease up and floor it only when needed. :thk:

When I was thinking about making that addition, and all the others, I did some math. Pretty much, what I got was: $1047 total cost for all mods yielding $375.9 in savings the first year(this is deducting the cost of mods) and about $1500 in savings every year afterwards. This is savings while using midgrade.
There is something that I am seriously considering, and I factored it into my math above. It is a fuel catalyst. Check out the thread and tell me what you think... http://www.nitroforumz.com/showthread.php?t=11132

Vinny,

I have background in Chemistry and I am suspicious of this device. Not only do they not give details on the claimed chemical reaction, but they don't even mention what is in this device.

Here is a link to at least one Dyno test that shows the Fitch device does nothing: http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/16471.html?1106936686

I googled this many times and have yet to find a truly detailed independent test of the device. Also keep in mind, that adding an extra filter in the fuel line can reduce total fuel flow unless it flows very freely. Reduce the fuel flow and you might get an increase in gas mileage if you lean out the mixture, but also a decrease in power may follow.

Leave this one as your last mod and go with the tried and true exhaust intake and chip mods first.

It will definitely be the last thing I add, if I add it. I am also skeptical about it. The websites dynos show a pretty impressive hp gain. Not supprising though. I mean, they do want thier product to sell. I was also concerned about the fuel flow issue. I dont want to put this thing on then have to get a higher flow fuel pump. Not worth the money, I dont think.
