hello all, could somebody tell me what is the most reliable pounds for the struts that are used on the hood brackets? i installed the brackets that i bought from canadianlimey and used a napa part number which i have now misplaced but had already bought the struts. i got the napa number off of this website but have not been able to re-find it. i got them from advanced auto and they were not able to tell me the pounds but said that they matched the napa number. i chanced it:shakehead: and bought them. i currently have them installed and they look and function great but they barely hold the hood up, not too safe.

also, is there a specific way they are to be installed......black side up, piston down, or black side down, piston up??

thanks...........

Mighty Lift C95230, should be 40#. I have my set sitting on the bench waiting for the Dupli-Color paint to arrive tomorrow and to get the brackets media blasted and primed. There are several post in the mods section on this. Most of the pictures show the piston (shaft) down.

If you got them from Advance, you got the same one's I initially received and they DONT work!! I returned them and went to AutoZone and got the right ones. The Advance ones have a large O-ring sized tab at the bottom, correct. Not what you want! I think they were part number 4611 or something like that. Take them back!

As a pointer in strength, you should be able to compress them by hand using your body weight. I'm 225 lbs and can push them all the way down on a solid floor with some effort, not busting a gut, but it does require a good push.

If you can't budge them they are way too heavy and if they go down very easily then way too light.

As for the orientation of the shocks, it shouldn't really matter which way they go. Whatever look you prefer...

hey starbandit, i looked at the packaging and the number is 4680, strong arm supports. i've searched on the net for these to find out what the poundage would be and no luck so far, advanced auto parts has no clue at all.:thk:

Per the other posts, you want the shocks for a 88-91 Honda CRX hatchback. Not sure on the Toy ones. Once the paint dries on mine I'll be testing them out. Got the Stone White on and waiting to apply the clear coat. Lots of others seem to being using the C95230 from AutoZone, so that's what I'm going with. Just pushing these down manually by hand takes some force, so I'll see how they do once installed.

i had to call the manufacturer of the strong arm support lifts to get the poundage rating for the ones that i have on my nitro now and guess what?????? they are rated for 28#'s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:shakehead: that's why they are not holding the hood up. it seems that at advanced auto and auto zone, once you give them the part number for the support lifts, if they have them in stock, you can get them then or they can order them for you. but what they can't do is tell you the rated pounds or even the total dimensions of them!!! aaarrrrgghhhh. frustrating. i know, i know.....go with the numbers you gave me. just trying to find out things that are not known by the parts stores and it gets so stressfull that now i know why they will not keep this info but its a secret.:)

will use the above number that you gave me starbandit. thanks again!!

Go AutoZone ONLY! If not in stock, they can get within a day or two. I'll be back out in the garage tonight for more work. Got the iridium plugs to install, another coat of stone white then clear coat on the brackets, my smart cord for the radar detector arrived today so now I can hard wire it, and Dodge called about my replacement under dash mat thingy that arrived. It's keeping me busy!

Another Project Completed

Thanks go out to all that did the research and time to get this figured out!

Here is what my finished product looks like. Works great!

NOTE: On the first attempt to close the hood, give the shock a pull also just to assist it, afterwards it will close on it's own. I also did many of the manual shock presses to get the fluid moving prior to the install over the past few nights while they sat on the workbench.

Thanks! I'd like to see the local dealerships faces when they raise the hood and try to use the support bar.

I take it in next Friday for one of the TSB's, to replace the mat under the drivers side dash, and to fix the rattle in the spare tire heat shield. May also see about the latest flashes for the PCM and TCM. Might as well get it all done in one shot.

I'm also going to ask about getting a print out from the service manual on changing the spark plugs. After looking under the hood, they didn't make it easy to swap the plugs. Dang near have to remove the plastic intake manifold to get to them. This will definitely be a weekend project.

starbandit, just wanted to let you know that i ordered the mighty lift supports from autozone today and i should get them tomorrow. i'll probably keep the 28# ones for future odd mod's that may come up.

also, i started a thread about my first tuneup and in it i brought my nitro to the dodge dealership and they raked in the bucks from me for doing little on my nitro but one of the things they did was change out the spark plugs for me. if you get time, look at the thread, it'll more than likely pursuade you not to bring it to them if needed. if you do get a print out on changing the plugs, do you think you'll be able to post it for all to see?? thanks again!!

I read your post on the tune up yesterday and yes they made a small fortune on the labor, but that's the going rate these days. Thus the reason I like doing my own work if possible, call me CHEAP or bored!

If I do get the copy, I'll scan it into pdf and post. Wish Chrysler would get the service manual version updated for IE7/Vista!! I can take it to work and use it there, or drag out my old dual celeron box and use Win2K. Now that I'm on the quad Xeon server, using Vista Ultimate with IE7 and it won't go with the current manual. Ebay has them for $66 on disc.
