Hard to say, could be any of:
  • transfer case
  • front drive shaft, u-joints, or bearings
  • front diff
  • front axle, or bearings

When's the last time you changed the fluids in the transfer case and front diff?
If it's been a while I'd start there.

If you can put it up on stands or a lift and run it in gear at idle you could try to see where the noise is coming from more accurately.

2007 sxt 3.7. Clicking in 4x4 shaft all the time, worse when 4x4 engaged. How to fix, or remove 4x4. Please help Starting to be a money pit
Most likely the pin bearings are dryed out. I had that happen on the yoke bearing of my 85 D50 pickup when it was 5 years old. Cost was 135 bucks in 1990. They get flat spots on them that causes the clicking. My lube shop was not filling the Zirk fitting with grease. "We didn't see it" cause they didn't rotate the shaft when on their lift! Bozos they were yep, bozos!

Noise is coming from the 4x4 shaft area. Diff fluid been changed 2 months ago. Plus the cv axels. Original thought what it was.
While driving, makes a metal clunking sound. Can I just remove the shaft and drive it as a 2 wheel drive.
Money pit, as soon as 1 problem fixed, 10 more develop.
Daily drive for work vehicle, have to do something.
When I put in 4x4, it really makes a clicking noise as it drives.

Ideas, answers welcome, thank you

Maybe at rubber plug. The front drive shaft removal was biggest thought. I was told I can, another said you can't due to it somehow sends power to rear. I hope someone has a definite answer. I'll replace if have too. But 3grand for suspension, and another 2grand for other issues. Once I do it. I'll never be able to sell it. Would never get back money I'll have put into it from the start.
If I could go back, I'd never gotten one.
So, looking for an absolute answer.

Thanks to everyone for commenting so far.

Play where the cv meets intermediate will cause clunking noise on passenger side. As well as driver side but I’m not sure that it’s called an “intermediate shaft” on driver side. The bushings these shafts ride on wear too. Cause clunking.

U do not need the 4x4 drive shaft. Also. Do the work yourself. Would’ve cost 1/3. Just saying.

I wouldn’t remove the cv axles though? Unless you’re going to weld the axle tubes shut????? Uhh
