I did not vote on the poll as I have a 6-speed, but 40MPH at part-throttle seems about right to me. At WOT 40 MPH would be a little low.

In general I would expect your Nitro to shift acound 5,000-6,000 RPM when you floor it. I rented a automatic Nitro and it seemed like that was the range.

Yeah, too soon on mine too ... unless I'm romping on it, and she shifts just fine! But that don't work for slow/go or neighborhood driving.

Mine doesnt seem to have enough power to shift that early.

My engine gets bogged down until i hit the gas to accelerate.

seems it should hold 3rd longer....

Maybe Dodge is trying to get higher MPG numbers?

I have to say that in general the 4speed auto in the Nitro I rented as well as the ones I test drove just seemed odd in every way. I really wish they would just offer the 5 speed auto for those who want it.

If I had been in the market for an automatic, I don't think the other things I love about the Nitro might have been enough for me to live with the 4 speed.

Mine has the 5 speed so I guess I would have to answer when does it shift into HIGH gear. I think it is right around 45 at steady throttle. Not too soon for me and it jumps down to 4 with a mild hit of the throttle so I'm good with it.

With the jet chip and a steady acceleration it drops into fourth around 50 mph. Not sure when accelerating hard, I'll keep my eyes open next time I do that.
I wonder how that will effect mileage?

I recently had the recall done on my '07 3.7. Was experiencing engine surging when at a stop and some infrequent stalling mainly when it was wet outside. In addition had a real bang when it shifted between 1 & 2. Gas mileage was over 20mpg at that point. Since the new program was downloaded and a new torque converter installed I'm going into 4th just over 60km/38mph. Down shifting back into 3rd is spotty, I almost have to floor the pedal otherwise the engine mildly shuddering at low revs and of course minimal acceleration despite the gas pouring in. I've modified my driving habits and generally stay right at the speed limit, no fast starts and use cruise as much as possible yet my gas milage is now averaging 16.7mpg/7.1km/l. Service tech at the dealership took it for a spin with the computer hooked up and got no errors. This sucks and I sure can't drive this puppy the way it should. I was getting better numbers with my '01 Durango. Anybody else experiencing these low numbers?

Welcome to the forum cps. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I've never had above 17mpg around town so I bet you are pissed at losing mileage. I don't however have the shuddering issues that most Nitro owners have.
Whereabouts in Ontario are you?

Mississauga. Thanks for the welcome. That 17mpg average is primarily highway driving and areas posted at 80kph. The shuddering ocurrs only in 4th when speed falls below 60kph and it won't downshift without my flooring out of overdrive down to 3rd.

Mine is around 40. It does seem to get bogged down if you don't keep steady pressure on the pedal or try to feather it. But I guess I have to deal with, as my wife can't drive the 6 speed, and I couldn't afford the 5 speed R/T at the time. :(

Honestly I have never payed any attention to when it shifts but I don't think it is a problem or I would have noticed it. As far as you MPG I would say there is something wrong. I get about 18 in the city and have gotten up to 28 on the highway. Maybe I just drive like an old man :4-dontknow:.

That's how I've been driving lately and attaining those averages. Certainly not the way I've driven in the past. Service manager and tech are baffled - supposedly waiting for a comeback from Chrysler:i_rolleyes:

The car is almost always driven with a trailer attached, but I took it down this AM to gas it, and discovered that it preferred to shift into 4th at about 55 m.p.h., which works well with the trailer. I could induce it to shift at 45, but it's a pain unless the car's driven on a straight, unobstructed road. Still, it probably "learned" the higher shift points, and I'm not inclined to change them; the Nitro isn't a daily driver, and with its usual load, the higher shift points make sense.
