Whistling Noise?

First post on these forums, actually found the forums looking for performance parts for my R/T.

I've had my R/T since early January and after the first week I started to notice a wierd whistling/metal on metal noise coming from underneath the engine. I originally thought it might be the breaks, so when I got home from work I pulled it into the garage and put it in park and started revving the engine. The sound only seems to come when applying the throttle, so there goes my breaks theory. Also it only makes the whistling noise when the car is fully warmed up, it will not make the noise when its still cold. I explained the noise to my dad who builds hot rods and he seemed to think it might be an exhaust leak.

I took it to the service dept here in Vegas @ Towbin Dodge. After three hours of waiting they told me they didn't hear anything. I brought it back a week later because the noise is really starting to bug me. Again they told me they couldn't hear it, so I made the service manager come outside and I demonstrated the noise for him which he finally heard. He told me it was probably fluid transfer to the transmission which I believe is bull****.

Has anyone else noticed this whistling noise while accelerating or am I just going crazy?

Welcome to the forum AgentOrange. Yours is the first post I can remember about a whistle on acceleration. The noise you are describing almost sounds like a fan belt slipping, which shouldn't be the case on a brand spanking new ride. Open up the hood and have someone else rev the engine for you. Let your eyes do the pointing, (keep your hands out of there!) and listen for yourself. Also pay close attention to your incomming air flow. Make sure all the connectors are nice and snug between the air filter box and the throttle body. I am sure others will post shortly with their thoughts. Good luck!!

You're not alone. I heard it the first time I drove our Nitro with the driver's window down. When I closed the window I could no longer hear it. My wife suggested I drive with the window up. :D

This TSB won't likely help you out with your R/T. With the 4.0L engine instead of the 3.7L. I recommend you listening to another 4.0L to see if it exhibits the same noise as you have experienced with your service manager involved.
After reading some of the Letters sent in about Towbin Dodge...I would run like hell for another dealership and I mean now! Just take a look at his web page and see the complaints that has been registered against him. Please do yourself this favor and at least check. Joe
Are these letters somewhere online? I can't stand Towbin Dodge but they were the very first dealership in Nevada to carry the R/T. I couldn't even find any in Arizona, Utah or Cali. That is why I bought from them.

I will be calling the dealership today to discuss the whistling noise and this TSB you guys pointed me to. The description is almost identical to what I am experiencing. Hopefully they won't give me crap about it not being the 3.7L.

I also hear that noise!!! I have been wondering what it is for like a month now. To busy to drop by the dealership so far, but I think that I am going to on Friday. It is kind of embarassing to be driving a brand new car that sounds worse then one that is 10 years old. I have the R/T 4.0 as well. Did we get an idea of what this problem is?:shakehead:
I have yet to find a solution to this problem. The dealership would not perform the TSB previously referenced in this thread since I have the 4.0L engine. Thankfully both my dad and brother are mechanics and helped me perform the TSB, which still didn't fix the problem.

I went back to the dealership to test drive another R/T and sure as s**t after it warmed up I could hear the whistling noise. There isn't much I could do at that point since another R/T made the same noise. Anyone else have any info to offer up?

i have exactly the same problem.

first the dealership said it was a front pulley, so they replaced it, and that didnt help.

then they took the car for 2 days trying to figure out the problem(they finally heard the same noise that i was hearing, so we were on the same page at least)

They contacted Chrysler tech support and they told the dealership that there as been one other problem like this in the country. and they claim there is a fix for it.

so i have to wait for the part to come in, then drop it off again and wait and see.

i will post again stating the results and the procedure that was done to it.

I've noticed a slight whitsling noise too when I accellerate. I have an RT with the 4.0 litre engine however. Gonna ask the dealer when I go next. I have over 9100km, so the next oil change is not far off!
noisey

what did they "claim" the fix is.
i just wondering if is the same noise i have
(a high pitch "hoot" type noise when stopping & accelerating
:( I hate those BS responses from mechanics just to try to get you out of their way. How about "I don't know what it is but we will bring it to Chrysler's attention"?
I have the same problem.... It just started right around 3500 miles. Does it when you accelerate and come to a stop. It also does it when you turn off the engine.... yes it does sound like a "woot"
4.0L Whistle anyone?

I've read the whistle noise is a TSB for the 3.7, but my R/T is making a whistle noise around 2k rpm, and it's not wind noise because it does it when I rev the engine while parked.

Anyone else with an R/T notice this?

I'm a little disappointed, I literally just bought the thing 2 days ago and it didn't do this while I test drove it. Also the front of the roof rack bar on the passenger side looks to be warped, and is coming off.
Hey SRT4driver, welcome to the forum. I have the 3.7 so I cant help you with the whistle but the roof rails is an ongoing problem. There are redesigned ones out there and ready to be installed. Just check with your dealership.

Thanks, I'll have to call them tomorrow... they want me to set up an "inspection" after 30 days of ownership anyway. Looks like they'll be fixing some things.
I have the RT model with the 4.0L engine and I don't hear that whistle noise on mine. Have the dealer drive it with you and they should look at it. Yes, as CL said, the stock roof rails are weak and poorly designed, but new ones have been redesigned to fix the issue. I've had problems getting my Canadian dealer to realize there are new ones. Hopefully you can get it fixed quickly! Let us know how you make out!
Well I called them today to see how things are going, and they told me the whistle noise is "normal"... I just about started to laugh out of sheer frustration, they said "We had the tech drive the other new R/T on the lot, it makes the same noise so it's normal" :shakehead: I disagreed again and mentioned the TSB for a whistle in the 3.7 and he got quiet for a little, I asked if they could just do the same thing on mine to fix it and he said "Well basically dodge just isn't acknowledging it as a problem on these motors at this point... if we fix it they won't pay us"

So I said "Look, I know how this works... I'll come in tonight to get my car and you'll charge me for the diagnostic time spent looking at something that ended up being quote "normal". I looked at the TSB on-line, I know it only takes a half hour and a drop of silicone to fix this...

at which point he interrupts me "well even so, they won't even pay me for 5 minuets, so I can't touch it"

I told them I will flat out refuse to pay for ANYTHING unless SOMETHING was actually done, fix it and I will pay out of my own pocket  "Just fix it, I just want it fixed... what's it going to cost 50 bucks?"

He finally said the tech wants to keep it another day, he wants to find a way to fix it, he's looking into it as best he can, "Don't worry about it, it's not like your warranty is about to expire, who knows maybe Dode will come out with a TSB for the 4.0 soon and you'll end up paying out of pocket for this"

I really could care less if I pay for it... I just want it fixed. This is rediculous...

What kind of loser dealership charges a customer diagnostic time when the vehicle is still under warranty!! This cracks me up..."Well basically dodge just isn't acknowledging it as a problem on these motors at this point... if we fix it they won't pay us" and "well even so, they won't even pay me for 5 minuets, so I can't touch it" So Chrysler is perfect now and your dealer can't diagnose if a defect exists, UNREAL!!!

It's very possible your noise is caused by the throttle body or where the throttle body mates to the intake, but what if it isn't? What if they do the repair you have recommended and it doesn't fix it. What if they come back again and say its "normal". The dealer can initiate a product report with Chrysler Tech Support and they may be able to help. Hopefully they'll find the cause and you'll be happy. :D
