Negative...negative...whistle remains...

And speaking of quality service, I was in today at Richmond Dodge at the Automall here in BC Canada and in for my first oil change. Mentioned the issue, they were aware of the fix stated in this thread, Service appointment is Friday Dec 19 to fix the whistle and the moonroof squeak. I got the run around from Carter Dodge in Burnaby with the "ITS NORMAL!" crap...but will update after friday! Thx to everyone for getting this started!

Well after two patient days of waiting and driving a crappy rental...I got my Nitro back today with the cylinder head gaskets replaced only to have the whistle still remain. I am wondering if they used the right parts...they were disappointed to and said they will keep looking and see what happens at Chrysler tech...in the meantime...I will cruise with the whistle and turn the radio up!

:( I'm dismayed that they put in the "old style" gaskets. That's what happened I'm sure ! They probably just ordered gaskets and the warehouse sent replacements; unfortunately they were the old ones. I'm sure there are thousands of new "old" gaskets out there so you have to implore with the service rep to ensure they use the new versions. This is pretty well documented now so have them do it again. P.S, My Nitro is perfect now with no whistle. Don't give up !!!

Reporting in - my head gaskets are replaced, and so far, WHISTLE IS GONE! I've only had time to drive it home, less than 10 miles, so I want to drive it some more to be sure, but it's looking good so far!

Just to be obsessive about this whole thing, and after seeing that mikeing had a problem with his "fix" - I compared the parts listed in my invoice with those listed in SRT4Driver and funon3's invoices. Since I'm not knowledgeable about parts, I tried to key in on the main things, and tried to interpret past, for example, SRT4's having probably had 2 sets of gaskets before he was finished, and both sets (the wrong ones and the right ones) are probably listed in his invoice.

The key part -- somebody check me on this, please -- seems to be the two GASKET INTAKE MANIFOLDs ordered: part #4663852-AB. As far as I can tell, this is the correct part number for the updated head gaskets. That part number is present on mine, funon3, and SRT4's invoices, all 3 of them.

On my invoice, other key parts were: (I'll leave out stuff like the coolant)
1 #4591827-AB Gasket Intake Plenum
1 #4792753-AC Gasket Cylinder Head
2 #4536492-AB Seal Camshaft Thrus[rest of word cut off on invoice]

Those parts (the 3 above) are different from parts listed on funon3's successfully done fix -- for example, on funon3's invoice, the Seal listed is part #4659430-AB. This makes me worry that my seal might not be correct despite the whistle being gone so far. I don't know what the part is, exactly, nor can I fathom why they would be different. The part descriptions are a little different for each of us, too, and again, I can't sort out why the set of parts used would be any different.

Any input from anybody, especially funon3 and SRT4Driver, if they've sorted out in detail which of their parts were the critical correct ones, would be great. I need to understand more about all these parts -- any of the rest of you who are mechanically savvy (that's most of you!) that might understand these variations, please let me know!

If the fix for the whistle is the head gaskets, than it would be the cylinder head gasket part number #4792753-AC Gasket Cylinder Head that is the fix. The other parts are ancillary to the repair. But why would they show only one head gasket since it is a V-6? I have seen head gaskets sole in complete sets and individually but never in pairs and a V-6 would have two heads, so why did they only change one side?? I hope you have a nice quite 4.0L now!

I'm really happy that the repair was successful "mdwcalif". Like momma said "patience is a virtue" especially when dealing with dealerships. I've put on a crapload of miles on my Nitro and she purrs like a kitten.

Has anyone looked into the possibility of the Alternator itself causeing the noise? i.e the bearings in it. Since this is common on more than the Nitro I wonder if chargers, calibers, nitros' etc etc, use the same alternators. As my 08 R/T has this whinning as well

Im getting really confused here. Can someone please explain or preferably put a sound file up. On what this whistling noise is exactly?

On my 07 Nitro I got two noises. One is a rear humming noise that occurs at 55 MPH or more, if I let go of the gas the noise goes away if I tap the gas it comes back. Wont occur in neutral at all.

The second noise is a high pitched whistle that is I believe wind noise, its very faint and I can hear it around the drivers side door window if I open the window. I dont think I can hear it if I just rev the engine. Only at speed.

Stop the vehicle, roll down your windows and turn off the radio. accelerate at normal speed, if there you should hear a whislte, almost like wind blowing window opening. Not a whine but a very distinct whisle.

Frederick, see post #36 (if you're sorting from oldest to newest -- in other words, it's the 36th oldest post) on this thread, where SRT4Driver uploaded a sound byte of the whistle to YouTube. People have described a variety of sounds, off and on in this thread, but the whistle in SRT4Driver's post is the one I had, and it is the one that is cured by the installation of the new-version head gaskets.

My whistle sound is still gone after the head gasket replacements, many thousands of miles later.

What?

Why not just tell me what page on this thread its on? I just went through almost all of it and cannot locate this sound file that SRT4Driver put up.

Thanks.

My apologies, Frederick. I gave you the post number and not the page number thinking that would be easier, in case your screen display is different from mine or something, maybe causing different page numberings. For me, each post has a number on it at the top right of each post, clear as day -- for example your last post is numbered #273.

For me, post #36, the one I'm referring you to with the sound clip in it, is on page 24 of this thread.

Hope that helps.

Well just to make sure everyone knows what I'm talking about, I took a video (very dark one...) of my Nitro making this noise. I placed the camera next to my front passenger tire and threw some revs to 2k.

Here it is

To make it easy to find. It is kinda way back there. For me it was on page 4, post #36.

All I heard was the engine reving ,
The best way to describe it is almost like a vacuum line is off and sucking air, with a very slight warbling whistle sound.
It starts at about 22 seconds in.

Thanks for clarification. And Thanks Scar0 for posting it again. :)

Yes, I heard the sound clip and mine does this also! Its a 4X2 RT.

I was at the Dodge main dealer this morning for a rear end humming diff noise that occurs at exactly 55MPH.

The mechanic was very thorough, he actually noticed this whistle noise at idle when tapping the gas. I mentioned the gasket issue and he was not aware of this, he told me that it was not even on the Chrysler TSB system.

He did however inform me that there is a notice for my car to have the new design belt and tensioner installed. I am going back next Saturday to have this fitted. Does anyone know what the easiest way to get the Head Gasket replaced is? I mean what is the procedure? The mechanics at my dealer dont know anything about it.

Out of interest is the 4L engine unique to this model vehicle? If not how comes no one seems to know about this issue?

Thanks

Is there anyone from Ontario, Canada with this problem in an R/T? I'm curious as to what dealer you went to and if they gave you a hassle. Canada seems to be in the stone age with regards to this kind of info. I'm worried that if I go to a dealer and mention this I'm going to end up with the "I've never heard of this" line.

You will have to do some searching in this thread. If I remember correctly there is a post/ posts, that have the part #'s and the procedure that was done to make it happen. Sit down with a service person and view this thread with them. :)) Then they can not deny the fix. There was a run of poorly designed head gaskets installed. Some have this problem, some don't. Just make sure they order the correct part and compare the new head gasket with the old one before installing. At one point one of the folks here had it replaced, the one that was shipped was the old style, and it still whistled. After they put in the correct one the whistle stopped.
