How to add lighting in the console

Has anyone installed lighting in the cavernous console between the front seats. I can't seen to get into a "system" with the existing design of the storage area.
As you know the top tray has to be removed to access the items in the lower area. Even during the day it's dimly lit at best.
I'm looking to install a light in the deeper area of the console. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has diagrams on how to remove the console and how to hook up the wiring that would really help.
Thanks in advance!

KEES.... If you get into the console there are power lines for the taking from the shifter lighting...
See Marks(Scar0) Drink holder lighting thread. He has the how to covered for you ...
I think!!!!!!
If not He will be able to help.

Hey Nitrover, you always have my back! Thanks, I want to mentally get it ready so when I feel up to it I can crank it out. I really liked the Lighted cop holders that Scar0 made. He used the power supply for the 4X4 that was not an option in his car. I have 4X4 on mine but I'll work on the power supply from the shifter lighting as you suggested. Again thanks for always helping.

Kees, I used the light wire that illuminates the 4X4 switch for the cup lights.
But you have to keep in mind that it only lights up when the running or headlights are on. The same is true for the shift position light, I believe. I have a manual trany, so using that one was not an option for me.
Beware; The Airbag control unit is located under the center console. Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before getting in there.

Thanks scar0. I would have had a "shocking experience" getting slapped by an airbag for getting fresh with her parts. I owe you one! I saw the install on the cup holders, brilliant. And above all you go quality work. I for one appreciate "professional grade" work.
Again great job and thanks for your help.

Thank you KEES.
Before you can get the console out you will have to remove the radio bezel.
See this post for info on that. You might have to change the shifter position as you go... for clearance.

Red circle = clip
Yellow circle = wire connector
Blue square = screw
Purple circle = tab

With the radio bezel off, then you have to loosen the shift bezel, (held in by clips) and remove the wire connectors. (you do not need to remove it, just loosen it)
Be careful here, as the front holes in the console are not very strong, (The dealer broke one of mine off when they did the H28 recall).

Next, pop off the back starting at the top (held in by clips) Note the tabs in the bottom, & disconnect the wire connections,
Image

Now you can get to the screws. 2 inside the shift bezel area, and 2 inside the back of the console.
The shift bezel can be turned and slipped thru it's hole in the console. This way you avoid removing the shift knob.
Unzip the E-brake sleeve, lift the console from the back (it takes a little wiggling) and it is off.

I had another thought. Since it is all apart, why not hook up to a constant power source under the dash and put in a little spring loaded button switch? Like the old style door jam dome light switch, or a glove box switch.
That way when you open the storage top, the light comes on and when you close it the light goes off. You could use a button LED or even a license plate light on the inside.

Oh oh, Now you got me thinking! I just might beat you to this Mod... :))
After the one I'm working on is done of course.

Scar0, a kindred spirit! If there is an easy way to do it let's try something else and make it a one of a kind. As you know these little projects end to quickly, then you have to work on what to do next.
Thnaks for tye great advice. I'm still shaking over the airbag info.

OK I cheated, I was a being lazy and sleeping most of the day. I told a friend about wanting to add a led light to my console. When I woke up today I found a LED light installed in my console. How lucky can a guy get huh? Im not sure how it was installed but it also dims as the lights in the suv dim after you get in. WAY COOL TO ME!

Hey Charlie, I told him what you said. We've been trying to think of a way to turn his VW Jetta into a Nitro, no luck yet. Any Ideas?
I agree DK he said the only reason he was able to do it was the I was too sick to get out of bed. Actually he said it was lucky for me otherwise I would have been telling him what to do and he said he would have had to hurt me.
No matter what, one great friend and I have a light in my console. How much luckier can I get.

Well KEES, I hope you don't mind me jacking your thread.
But you were the one that inspired me to do this mod, with my own twist of course.
I decided to go with a license plate light inside the console. I didn't want it to be white so I painted the cover with some green paint.
Image

The chrome cover directs the light down into the console so there is no glare.

I purchased a door switch for $3.29 at Schucks (I think is was for an 87 S10. Part # BWD S1067), but there was no female plug for it. So I made one from an old computer cable I had sitting around. I only needed 2 wires so I cut off what I needed. Before...

After...

Connected to the switch.
Image

I then removed the center console and took the inside out of the storage area to mount the light. On the right side was the perfect spot because of the indentation. It won't get bumped easily there.
Image

For the switch, the right rear of the console had the perfect spot to install it. I used a file to enlarge and round out the square hole that was already there. Slipped in the switch, which has tabs to hold it in place.
Image

I re-installed the storage section back into the console.
Image

I ran a wire from the lighter power wire, to the switch, to the light, to ground. I used bullet connectors so I can disconnect them if I need to remove the console again.
Image

Image

Put the console back in the rig, cut a slot in the back cover, top piece to accommodate the switch.
Image

I had to wait for night to get the final Pic with it on.

The switch works great. Light only comes on when the lid is open. :))
Thanks again for the inspiration!

Aw shucks... Thanks folks I owe it all to KEES. He got me thinking... which can be dangerous at times. LOL
KEES, adding a switch should be fairly easy. Since your light is already there, all you would have to remove would be the back of the console. The hole back there should have enough room for you to wire in a switch no problem.

Hey Scar0, as you know a friend installed the light when I was out of commission. I don't know where wired it to but it turns on then you turn on the interior lights or open a door. Of course I really don't need the light if the overheads are on./ But not a peep out of me..... NO NO NO. It's was such an act of kindness by a greaty friend. But as time passes and we forget (at our age it's not tuff to do) I'll have to rewire. I kept the instructions you sent a while ago.
Actually we were out last night and I had to turn on the interior lights and thought .... how thankful I am!
