Uk 20" tyre size ?

The standard tyres on my 20" rims are 245-50-R20,
I,ve been told that these tyres are very expensive to replace , as they are not a common UK standard.
I,ve tried a few online sites , and most dont stock them.
Should I stick with this standard (any recommendations)?
Or has anyone replaced their tyres with an alternative size?

Hi, been considering the same question, you can fit different sizes but try to remain close to the same rolling circumference,
this site has a good calculation table to help
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp
255/50 20 are about 5mm bigger radius, 265/45 20 are about 4 mm smaller but these may not suit the standard rims, 265/50 20 about 10mm bigger. the standard rims arnt that wide to say there 20 diameter, 7.5 inch i think.
one issue is if you change size and the rolling circumferance is different from standard you realy should change all four tyres so as not to upset the electronics ABS etc, it can cope with small differences but maybe not a big tyre change on one axle.

The tyre pressure sensors can be changed, or new ones bought to fit new wheels, Not sure about the Nitro but im told the 300c european sensors operate at a different frequencie to USA and guess what cost alot more. so may be the same for the Nitro.

With the discounts you may get a ood deal on new wheel tyre packages, cheaper than a set of standard tyres.

Theres lots of good info on sizes and styles on this site, i just wouldnt go for chrome, ive had some and our winter road salt loves to eat them.

Just a reminder on sizes, 245 / 50 20, 245 is the width in millimetres to the side wall not necesaroly the tread width, 50 is the aspect ratio it is not a direct measurment it means 50% of the width, 20 is the rim diameter in inches.

The other number on the end (96w) for example as i cant remember actually whats on them is the load speed index, what load each tyre is rated to carry at a given speed. you then look this number up in a table, these are on the net.
Loads of research for you to do!

hope this helps
Keith.

i had the same fear of tyre prices when i bought mine, but have done some digging around and when i need to i will be going for a set of 255/50 20's or 265/50 20's
you can buy a set of 4 of they sizes for around ÂŁ450 from black circles or tyre express.
but im sure you could haggle with local tyre suppliers for a set
cheers

what a valuable piece of knowledge..just what I am after±..I was thinking about my tyres this morning, they don't need doing yet, but just incase.
I was surfing about a bit and yes prices were about ÂŁ300 per corner until I tried tyre express and upped the width a bit..then just a case of getting someone to fit them.

Hi, am from Bonnybridge, near Falkirk, and I am a Dundee UTD fan, so my Nitro was always going to be Tangerine.
Its the standerd 20inch wheels, but they look ok on an orange nitro. But I only just found out these were alloys, with the a rim cover, so i think it will play with my mind a bit and i will end up upgrading when i need new tyres.

Yes, i have been reading up on here about the issues with the chrome clad wheels, and they were the first thing i checked when viewing the Nitro. Its an 08 plate, 3 years old on 1st FEB 2011, but they look very new to me, think they have been changed recently. whats the warrenty period for the wheels.

As soon as i get my keys, i will join the NITRO-SCOTS, i just dont want to temp fate.

Cheers

I had to do that just for a laugh....:chuckle: Those are the stock rims though and because of the corrosion I decided to make them my winter wheels.
They have a red stripe on the origional. Photoshoped for Dundee Utd.

I do miss my nitro but the fuel was killing me on my journeys...and I am glad I never had to buy tyres...

A rather extreme measure lol, I don't even collect mine till Friday :D
I am sure you will enjoy it!.......just imaging spending ÂŁ425 per year on tax, ÂŁ300 per corner on tyres and ÂŁ1.42 pence per litre on diesel......I bought mine new in 2009 and had it about 18 months....loved every minute of it...but was fed up of feeding the government TAX money all the time.
